Tips for Successful Job Shadowing
- Upon initial contact with the job shadowing host, you should clearly show your interest and inform yourself about the company beforehand. Formulate your expectations and wishes.
- Prepare as much as possible beforehand. Use the company's website to learn more about it and read press releases and other materials about the company. Get information about the function of the host.
- Formulate your questions beforehand. This is your opportunity to learn a gread deal about the work world. Be curious! Ask alumni about their career path and seek advising.
- Dress code: If you are uncertain, ask about suitable clothing. You certainly do not want to wear jeans in a meeting where everyone is dressed in suit and tie or the opposite.
- Be on time and inform your contact person in a timely manner if something comes up.
- Observe the work place of your job shadowing host and get a picture of the collaboration within the department. It is possible that your host will be answering emails for a while or has to take care of tasks that are not as exciting for you. That is part of the job.
