International Doctoral Candidates

If you are interested in pursuing doctoral studies at RWTH Aachen University and have obtained a degree at a university outside Germany, please check whether you meet the admission requirements for doctoral studies at RWTH first. We have compiled further information on a separate page specifically for international doctoral candidates.

Application and Registration for Doctoral Studies

If you have obtained your degree at a university outside Germany, Division 2.1 – Admissions and Social Affairs, part of the University’s International Office, will check whether your degree fulfills the formal requirements for doctoral studies. Please look up and read all the information about the application process thoroughly and make sure you observe the application and enrolment deadlines. If possible, try to apply at the beginning of the application phase so that you have enough time to complete the procedure.

Information for Applicants for a Doctoral Scholarship from the China Scholarship Council

RWTH has a Memorandum of Understanding with the China Scholarship Council, which provides for preferential treatment of potential doctoral candidates at RWTH. If you would like to apply for a doctoral scholarship with the CSC, we advise you to contact RWTH's liaison office in Beijing by before you apply.

Short Stay Abroad During Doctoral Studies

If you would like to pursue a short stay at RWTH as part of your doctoral studies – a so-called sandwich doctorate – you must also apply and enroll for a place.

German Courses

The Center for Doctoral Studies, in cooperation with the International Office and the RWTH Language Center, offers a quota of free German courses especially for international doctoral students wishing to acquire German language skills.
