Up to and including the winter semester 2021/22, students had to submit a health insurance document (insurance certificate or certificate of exemption from compulsory health insurance) for enrollment at RWTH Aachen University, which was issued in paper form by the public health insurance companies. As of January 1, 2022, the information from these certificates will only be provided digitally to the universities by the health insurance company. You will no longer receive certificates from the health insurance company and consequently you will no longer be able to upload them to RWTHonline.

If you would like to be enrolled at RWTH Aachen University, please contact your chosen German public health insurance company or other health insurance company to clarify or notify them of your personal insurance status. This also applies to persons who have already taken out private health insurance. Make sure that you inform the health insurance company that you will be studying at RWTH Aachen University so that the public health insurance company of your choice can digitally confirm the insurance status to RWTH.

The European Health Insurance Card, or EHIC is not sufficient. A written membership certificate will also not suffice.

You cannot be enrolled without digitally reporting your insurance status to a health insurance company.

Basically, you can contact any public health insurance company to determine what you insurance status is. If you already have public health insurance, contact the company that you registered with.

Please send an e-mail to your public insurance company. Provide your insurance number and ask that your information be sent to RWTH Aachen University (number: H0000784)

Your insurance company will then send your information to RWTH.

Please contact your chosen public health insurance company and submit a membership application. Most public insurance companies provide the application form as a download on their website.

Please tell the public insurance company that you intend to study at RWTH Aachen University (number: H0000784). As soon as you are insured, the company will inform RWTH of this.

Please submit the following documents to your chosen public health insurance by e-mail. They will check whether your private insurance has sufficient coverage to allow you to enroll at RWTH Aachen University

1. a copy of your private insurance
2. a copy of your identity card / passport
3. your German address (alternatively your home address)
4. indication of the desired university (RWTH Aachen, number: H0000784)
5. students from non-EU countries must also submit an application for exemption. (Please have the application sent to you by your chosen insurance company). See the page Insurance for students for more information on this procedure.

The public insurance company you have chosen will inform you accordingly. If the insurance cover is not sufficient, you must take out insurance with a public insurance company in Germany (see section 2).

Please submit the following documents to your chosen statutory health insurance by e-mail:

1. a copy of your EHIC /GHIC / AT 11 (if possible, it should be valid for the entire 1st semester)
2. a copy of your identity card / passport
3. your German address (alternatively your home address)
4. indication of the desired university (RWTH Aachen University, number: H0000784)

Your health insurance will now send a notification to RWTH Aachen University that you fulfil the insurance obligation.

If you want to work in Germany during your studies (mini-job, student job, self-employment, etc.) your EHIC is not sufficient. In this case, you must obtain a public insurance in Germany (see section 2).

Travel insurance does not provide sufficient health insurance cover for the duration of your studies in Germany and is not accepted as proof of insurance.

Travel health insurance is only valid for your visa and your entry into Germany as long as the semester has not yet begun.

You must take out public insurance  (see section 1) or private insurance (see section 3).

If you already have German public health insurance, proceed as mentioned in  S ection 1.

If you have private medical insurance (German or foreign), proceed as mentioned in Section 3.

If you have an EHIC, a GHIC or a AT-11 certificate, proceed as mentioned in Section 4.

As a doctoral candidate, you do not need to prove your health insurance status. You can enroll without being registered with a public health insurance company and you do not have to prove your health insurance status to RWTH Aachen University.

This is also the case if you are registered as a doctoral candidate at a university outside of Germany and you are just pursuing a temporary stay at RWTH Aachen University as part of your doctoral studies ("sandwich PhD").

Regardless of this fact, we strongly suggest that you contact a German statutory health insurance company and have them inform you about adequate health insurance in Germany. Treatment costs can be very high in this country and could financially ruin you if you do not have adequate health insurance.

Please submit the following documents to the public insurance company of your choice via e-mail. It will then inform RWTH that you are not required to have insurance, and you will be able to enroll.

1. a copy of your identity card / passport (only the side with your personal information)
2. your German address (alternatively your home address)
3. indication of the desired university (RWTH Aachen University, number: H0000784)
