Emergency Services
If you are in urgent need of emergency treatment you can call the accident and emergency department of a local hospital (in German: Ambulanz / Notaufnahme) or contact your doctor (GP). If you do not know the number, please dial 110 for Police or 112 for the Fire Department, and they will send ambulance staff who will take you to a hospital.
Medical Care
In Germany, you typically select and register with a General Practitioner (GP, Allgemeinmediziner) who acts as your "family doctor" (Hausarzt). The GP will refer you to other specialists such as eye specialists, dermatologists, etc. If you decide to take children with you to Aachen, we advise you to choose a pediatrician soon after your arrival, as you will have to take your children to compulsory preventive medical check-ups. Unlike the other specialists,pediatricians can be contacted direkctly - you don't have to see your GP first.
You will find a list of doctors in the Yellow Pages (Gelbe Seiten). We recommend that you make an appointment for your visit as waiting times can be quite long, depending on the doctor's office.
Hospitals
Aachen University Hospital (UKA) is the largest hospital in Aachen and one of the largest hospitals in Europe. In addition, there are several public hospitals, private clinics and rehab clinics within the city. The hospitals, with the exception of some private clinics, are open to all insured patients.
Pharmacies and Medication
In Germany, medication can only be obtained at pharmacies (Apotheken) and most medicines require a prescription from your doctor. Adults will have to pay a small fee for prescription drugs at the pharmacy while under age and low-income patients are exempt from these fees. The exemption can be obtained by the health insurance company. Private patients must pay the full price for their medicines, but they can reclaim their expenses from their insurance provider.
Pharmacies Open at Night and on the Weekend
At least one pharmacy in every district of the city is open at night and on weekends, so you can always access medication. Please check the list of emergency pharmacies in Aachen to find the nearest one to you.
