You will need to show proof of participation in a subject specific self assessment in order to enroll (not to apply). You can print out the participation certificate yourself.

Curriculum

The vocational specialization of supply technology can only be combined with the vocational specialization of structural engineering or machine technology at RWTH.

Machine technology combination

The degree program combination of machine technology and supply technology is a broad-based basic education in engineering sciences, mathematics, natural sciences, systems sciences, and supply technology. Building on these basics, students will then study more advanced machine technology and supply technology topics. Furthermore, they will be able to specialize in specific topics of interest in their supply technology and machine technology electives, being able to choose from, for example, fundamentals of fluid technology, water supply, energy system technology, manufacturing engineering, or technical combustion.

In addition, the degree program includes in-depth training in subject didactics, such as subject-specific teaching for theory-based reflection of specialized work, the basics of curriculum development in industrial-technical vocational specializations besides developing, and designing teaching and learning arrangements. The program includes educational studies and a school orientation internship.

Furthermore, students must complete a four-week internship in an occupational area. This can be recognized as a school internship. Proof of 52 weeks of a school internship must be provided for admission to the preparatory period of service prior to qualifying for the teaching profession.

A detailed description of the curriculum is always available via the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering website.

Combination with structural engineering – your studies start earlier, advisory session recommended!

It shall be noted that the combination with structural engineering is offered in cooperation with FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, where all the technical courses are taught. For our students, this means their studies start slightly earlier. Prospective students should contact the faculty's departmental academic advising service early on so they are best prepared for all the special features and regulations of their studies.

Study Abroad Programs

The Faculty has several well-established ties with international partner universities, both in and outside Europe, facilitating collaborations in teaching and research as well as exchange programs such as ERASMUS+. Check the overview of all RWTH exchange programs. The Faculty of Civil Engineering's International Office or the academic advisors provide information on the feasibility of staying abroad.

Combination Possibilities

Vocational school teacher training includes studying two subjects. In the course of study Model I, both subjects are equally studied. In the course of study Model II, one of the subjects is studied in a broader scope.
Detailed information on both the course of study models is available on this page.

Combination options for supply technology:
Supply technology is a vocational minor and offers two combination possibilities in the course of study Model II: the unequally balanced combination with the vocational major of machine technology or the unequally balanced combination with the vocational major of structural engineering. The contents of all vocational minors that can be combined with structural engineering are only studied from the third or fourth semester onwards. Changing between vocational minors is unproblematic within your first few semesters but should be discussed with your departmental advisor.

Prerequisites

The RWTH Aachen "Lehramt" Self Assessment is an enrollment prerequisite for this course of study. You will need to submit your participation certificate when you enroll, but not in order to apply.

Career Prospects

With the Bachelor degree, students are qualified for work in the following fields:

  • Human resources development, operational further training and education, operational continuing education
  • In institutions and association for professional education and further development (professional associations or chambers)
  • Professional education institutions and institutions for professional rehabilitation
  • Development of teaching and learning media

The Master of Education qualifies an individual for the teaching practice period and to become a teacher afterwards. Students who study manufacturing and machine technology have good employment opportunities in public teaching service.

Teachers of supply technology at a vocational school teach apprentices for careers including facility mechanics for sanitary engineering, heating and cooling engineering, specialists for pipe, sewage, or industrial services, specialists for water supply technology, plumbers, and mechatronics for refrigeration engineering.

A further field of occupation are fulltime training courses (assistant) and further training (technician, master) such as solar technicians, water masters, and plumbers.

You can find information from the NRW Ministry of Schools about the career prospects for various fields of teaching through 2039/2040 in the brochure Prognoses on the Job Market for Teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia (de).

Master's Degree Prospects

The Master of Education can be pursued after this Bachelor course of study. Only after completing the consecutive Master of Education with a Master's in Machine Technology, will graduates receive the admission qualification for the teaching profession. During the Master course of study, professionalization for a teaching career at a vocational school is placed at the focus, through an advanced studies in education, further technical classes, and a school internship semester.

Since your Bachelor degree opens up various futher education possibilities, you can - depending on your subject combination - persue other Master's programs. The respective exam board will decide whether or not you are qualified for a Master's that is not in the field of education.

Examination Regulations
