The goal of the oldest course of study in the RWTH Aachen Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the broad training of mechanical engineers, who may be employed in all technical fields in the industry in research and development as well as in production and distribution.

The Master's programs are scientific, research-oriented degree programs, aligned towards basic principles and methods. They enable students to be successful professionally successful over their entire career, because they are not restricted to learning current material, but also learn theoretical underlying fundamental concepts and methods, that last longer than current trends.

The task of chemical engineering is chemical change. With the help of chemical, physical, and biological process steps, the so called fundamental operations, the base materials are transformed into other materials. These can be classical applications such as the filtration of ores or processing of crude oil. Particularly in the last few years new fields of application, like the transition of biomass into fuel and basic chemicals, have been at the focus of chemical engineering. The foundation of chemical engineering is the return of many production processes to a comparatively small number of basic operations.

Degree Content

The three semester long course of study is broken down into two pieces. During the two semester examination period, students should complete all mandatory and elective modules. In the final and third semester, students independently work on a defined research topic and finish their Master thesis.

An outline of the degree content is given in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study.

Prerequisites

A prerequisite for starting studies in a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements. On the faculty website you can find detailed information on how to apply.

Career Prospects

After successfully completing the Master's program, it is possible for students to apply for doctoral studies at one of the chairs in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A profession in any technical field and almost any branch and sector of industry both domestically and abroad is possible. Futhermore, graduates are able to successfully work in integrative and interdisciplinary topic areas.

Examination Regulations

Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s Comprehensive Examination Regulation. Examination regulations are only published in German as they are legally binding.

Subject Specific Exam Regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
