Dates and Deadlines
The goal of this course of study of the RWTH Aachen Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the broad training of mechanical engineers, who may be employed in all technical fields in the industry in research and development as well as in production and distribution.
The Master programs are scientific, research-oriented degree programs, aligned towards basic principles and methods. They enable students to be successful professionally successful over their entire career, because they are not restricted to learning current material, but also learn theoretical underlying fundamental concepts and methods, that last longer than current trends.
Mastering machines as well as the ongoing and innovative development of new and existing machines, process and materials ensures the economic prosperity or Germany by way of a technological advantage. Both plastics technology and textile technology in particular offer both exceptional and diverse professional opportunities for your engineers in light of the constantly growing applications of plastics and technical textiles. Plastics and technical textiles are everywhere from car interiors to highly-functional airplane components to our daily consumer products.
Plastics Technology
The goal of the plastics technology program is to enable engineering students to take the special characteristics of plastics and use them as best they can to solve problems wherever plastic materials have advantages over other materials.
The chemistry and physics of polymers form the basis for working with plastics. They explain the substance behavior of plastics during processing and also in their application. Exact knowledge of the various processing techniques is the prerequisite when it comes to choosing the best production process with regard to feasibility and profitability. The theoretical program is completed by practical lab exercises in polymer chemistry and plastics processing. In these labs, the basic principles of polymer synthesis and processing technologies for plastics engineering are explained clearly and in a hands-on manner.
Textile Technology
The program focuses mainly on the development and the design of textile machines and new processes to manufacture all kinds of textiles. Spinning machines for cotton are just as much a part as are intelligent air jet weaving machines, synthetic fiber production and processing and processes to manufacture technical textiles for use in composites and the medical textiles.
Degree Content
The three semester long course of study is broken down into two parts. During the two semester long examination period, students complete all required and elective modules. In the final third core semester, students independently work on a defined scientific topic and write their Master thesis.
An outline of the degree content is given in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study.
Prerequisites
A prerequisite for starting studies in a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements. On the faculty website you can find detailed information on how to apply.
Career Prospects
After successfully completing the Master's program, it is possible for students to apply for doctoral studies at one of the chairs in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A profession in any technical field and almost any branch and sector of industry both domestically and abroad is possible. Futhermore, graduates are able to successfully work in integrative and interdisciplinary topic areas.
Examination Regulations
Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s Comprehensive Examination Regulation. Examination regulations are only published in German as they are legally binding.
Subject Specific Exam Regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
