The goal of this course of study of the RWTH Aachen Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the broad training of mechanical engineers, who may be employed in all technical fields in the industry in research and development as well as in production and distribution.
The Master programs are scientific, research-oriented degree programs, aligned towards basic principles and methods. They enable students to be successful professionally successful over their entire career, because they are not restricted to learning current material, but also learn theoretical underlying fundamental concepts and methods, that last longer than current trends.
The most important future tasks in energy engineering can be summarized in two key terms: conservation of resources and environmenal conservation. Both goals require the improvement of existing energy conversion processes, including the implemented apparatuses, machines, and the related energy system engineering. Simultaneously, the development of new energy conversion processes based on renewable energies are immediately needed, in order to make resources, that are increasingly running out, technically mature and to make economically feasible alternative available. Concrete areas of responsibilites for energy engineers and within the energy engineering course of study result directly from these issues.

The three semester long course of study is broken down into two pieces. During the two semester examination period, students should complete all mandatory and elective modules. In the final and third semester, students independently work on a defined research topic and finish their Master thesis.
The necessary subject knowledge is taught in the following specializations:
- Mobile Propulsion
- Energy Supply
- Energy System Design
An outline of the degree content is given in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study.
A prerequisite for starting studies in a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements. On the faculty website you can find detailed information on how to apply.
After successfully completing the Master's program, it is possible for students to apply for doctoral studies at one of the chairs in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A profession in any technical field and almost any branch and sector of industry both domestically and abroad is possible. Futhermore, graduates are able to successfully work in integrative and interdisciplinary topic areas.
Module Handbook and Examination Regulations
The module handbook provides a description of all modules of a degree program and offers a comprehensive insight into the program contents.
The examination regulations are comprised of legally binding provisions on learning objectives, prerequisites for study, the course structure and processes, and examination procedures.
Regulations that generally apply to all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, including information on language proficiency requirements, can be found in RWTH's General Examination Regulations. These general regulations are further specified and complemented by the subject-specific examination regulations.
If two examination regulations are valid for a degree program during a transition phase, the most current version shall apply to students enrolling in the program for the first time.
Please note that only the German examination regulations are legally binding.
The Master course of study in Energy Engineering Master is offered by the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
