In the mandatory modules of this degree program, students are first taught skills in the field of model-based system development in a theoretical, product-neutral manner. This is further supported with practice-oriented courses in communication and project management. In this way, the mandatory section ensures a consistent base of the qualification profile of all graduates, who will be able to face the challenges of today’s development processes.

The courses Applied Design and Product Development I and II are key to this degree program. In these courses, students independently apply cross-disciplinary skills from model-based product development and project management. For this purpose, the participants work on industry-driven project assignments in small groups of up to 20. This lets them gain first-hand practical experience in applying the necessary skills in all stages of modern development processes, ranging from the definition of the requirements and concept development to prototyping and validating the results.

In addition to this mandatory section, the Master's program also offers two specializations:

  • Drive Train Engineering
  • Structural Engineering

Both of these teach specialist engineering knowledge within the related fields. They each feature two core elective areas in which students can choose modules related to their own interests.

Finally, this program is completed with a broad superordinate core elective section, so that students can tailor the content of the Product Development Master's degree program to their individual interests and define industry-specific highlights under professional guidance.

Degree Content

This three-semester course of study is divided into two parts. During the two-semester examination period, students should complete all the mandatory and elective modules in the program. In the third and final semester, students work on a defined research topic independently and write up their findings in a Master's thesis.

An outline of the degree content is depicted in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study.

Prerequisites

A prerequisite for starting studies in a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements. On the faculty website you can find detailed information on how to apply.

Career Prospects

After successfully completing the Master's program, it is possible for students to apply for doctoral studies at one of the departments in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A profession in any technical field and almost any branch and sector of industry both in Germany and abroad is possible. Futhermore, graduates are able to successfully work in integrative and interdisciplinary topic areas.

Examination Regulations

Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s Comprehensive Examination Regulation. Examination regulations are only published in German as they are legally binding.

Subject Specific Exam Regulations stipulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
