Civil Engineering With Orientation Semester B.Sc.

This cooperative course of study between RWTH Aachen University and FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences is aimed at prospective students wishing to gain a realistic insight into the civil engineering course of study at both universities. This will then let them choose the right university for them and, possibly, a specialization at a later stage.

With this program, the two participating universities are offering students the opportunity to get to know both universities and be gently eased into the subject-specific requirements.

In contrast to the RWTH study program in civil engineering, the cooperative program runs for eight semesters and starts in the summer semester. The students are initially enrolled at FH Aachen. After the first semester, which is jointly organized by both universities, the students choose the university that best suits their interests.

If they wish to continue a more academic path, they will do so at RWTH, with the partial course of study Civil Engineering Plus. There are two different options at FH Aachen: the civil engineering or wood engineering courses. The course of study concludes with the Bachelor's examination at the chosen university.

Degree Content

During your first semester, you will be supported in the orientation process thanks to introductory courses and a close mentoring scheme. The course content comprises the following (sub)modules: Mathematics, Learning to Study, Student Mentoring, Introduction Days, Insights into Civil Engineering, Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Responsible Technology Development, and Data Processing in Civil Engineering.

The subsequent semesters are - if a continuation of the studies at the RWTH is chosen - identical in content to the regular Civil Engineering course, supplemented by some additional modules in the core curriculum and concentration areas. Prerequisites

If you would like to continue your studies at RWTH after your first semester, you must provide proof of a general or subject-related university entrance qualification certificate or equivalent qualification. More information can be found on RWTH's website under "Admission Requirements." A university of applied sciences entrance qualification suffices for studies at FH Aachen.

Pre-internship
To continue your studies in the second semester, you must provide proof of having completed an internship. This can either be pre-university work experience or an internship completed after the first semester. Career Prospects

Civil engineers are involved in planning, calculations, assessments, the conduction of projects, and coordination. With their skills profile they are hired in various fields of application such as structural engineering, industrial construction and bridge construction; planning, construction, and operation of traffic routes; state, regional, and urban planning; water engineering, water management, and urban water management; foundation engineering, rock operations, and underground construction; environmental protection; and building construction and construction management.

Engineers trained in Germany are sought after all over the world – skills often sought in the areas of transportation, water, tunnel, and bridge construction. Due to the multiperspectivity engineers educated at RWTH possess, they are not only experts for the classical disciplines of civil engineering but also for interdisciplinary work in the context of economic, legal, infrastructural, and environmentally-relevant problems.

Master's Degree Prospects

In the Civil Engineering Master's program, students choose from among eight concentrations: construction production systems and construction process management, building materials science, constructive structural engineering, constructive engineering, constructive hydraulic engineering, tunnel engineering and geotechnics, transport, and water management.

Each concentration offers diverse possibilities to create one's specific profile. An extraordinarily comprehensive spectrum of elective modules allows students to combine subjects that correspond to their personal interests and career prospects.

Furthermore, graduates – when necessary with adjustments during Bachelor's studies and additional requirements in Master's studies – can also be admitted to the Faculty's other Master's courses of study: Environmental Engineering, Transport Engineering and Mobility, and Industrial Engineering: Civil Engineering.

The examination regulations are comprised of legally binding provisions on learning objectives, prerequisites for study, the course structure and processes, and examination procedures.

These general regulations are further specified and complemented by the subject-specific examination regulations.

If two examination regulations are valid for a degree program during a transition phase, the most current version shall apply to students enrolling in the program for the first time.
