Degree Content
The electives in this curriculum offer students the option of advancing their studies in manufacturing and machine technology based on their interests. Examples of electives include: Communication and Organization Development, Design and Application of Lasers and Optical Systems, Surface Technology, and Metrology and Quality. Through these electives, students are able to bridge the gap between engineering fundamentals and applications in the career field.
With university studies preparing and accompanying them, students complete a practical semester at a school to apply their technical skills together with didactic skills during lessons. Graduates are able to develop and implement lesson strategies with the help of subject-didactic skills and to present them to third-parties. The Master's thesis serves as the conclusion to studies.
An outline of the degree content is given in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study.
Study Abroad
The Faculty has several international partner universities with which it has well-established links, such as collaborations in teaching and research as well as exchange programs such as ERASMUS+. An overview of all RWTH Aachen exchange programs can be found at: Overview of Exchange Options. Information on the feasibility of stays abroad provides the Study Abroad Counselling of the Faculty or the Departmental Advisors.
Combination Possibilities
In the Master's course of study students continue the combination of subjects from their teacher training Bachelor course of study. The vocational manufacturing technology course of study at RWTH Aachen University can only be studied in combination with the vocational machine technology course of study. The following descriptions apply only to vocational manufacturing technology. The corresponding course of study description provides information about the combination subject.
Prerequisites
First University Degree
An initial university degree is required to begin studies. This may be a teacher training Bachelor in manufacturing technology or another technically adequate university degree. An initial degree from a university of applied sciences may also be accepted as a suitable prerequisite. The exact technical educational background required is summarized in the examination regulation. The examination board is responsible for determining if admissions requirements have been fulfilled.
Language Requirements
In order to be admitted to teaching practice students must provide documentation of skills in two foreign languages. The university entrance qualification typically fulfills this. Students, who did not learn German as a native speaker and acquired their university entrance qualification in German, only need to submit proof of knowledge of one additional language.
Only one foreign language is required for students pursuing a combination with at least one professional subject for teacher training at a vocational school.

Academic Advising for all Students Changing Their Course of Study
Students may need to catch up on additional work within the framework of practical or field studies, subject didactics, and technical studies. Students, who have not completed a Bachelor's degree in teacher training at RWTH Aachen, should contact the academic advising office of their desired teacher training subject.
Subject-Related Practical Training
Training to become a teacher at vocational school includes relevant practical training lasting twelve months. WIth this practical training accompanying you during your studies, you are already familiar with individual areas in vocational training for school students when you begin your teaching practice period. Relevant training and employment can be counted as subject- related practical training. The subject-related practical training is not part of teacher training studies, meaning the twelve months are not included in the study period. The practical training must be completed before beginning the teaching practice period. The majority of the practical training should be completed before finishing studies. Career Prospects
The Master of Education aims the professionalization of teachers for vocational schools. It qualifies an individual to enter teacher training for vocational schools. Students who study manufacturing technology have good employment opportunities in public teaching service.
Teachers of manufacturing technology at a vocational school teach apprentices for careers including industrial mechanics, manufacturing technology, plant mechanics, metal construction, cutting machine operation, and toolmakers.
A further field of occupation are fulltime training courses and further training (technician, master) such as the state certified assistant for machine tool technology, technicians in machine technology with a focus on plant mechanics, or industrial masters with a focus on metal.
You can find information from the NRW Ministry of Schools about the career prospects for various fields of teaching through 2039/40 in the brochure Prognoses on the Job Market for Teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia (de).
With the Master's degree, students are also qualified for work in the following fields:
- Scientific work at a university, particular in the field of vocational education and subject-didactics
- Human resources development, vocational further training and education, professional adult education
- In institutions and associations for professional education and further development (professional associations or chambers)
- Professional education institutions and institutions for professional rehabilitation
- Development of teaching and learning media
