Admissions Exam
Registration Deadline for Admissions Exam
Summer Semester: October 1 of every year
Winter Semester: April 1 of every year
The admissions exam determines whether an applicants fulfills the technical and methodological prerequisites for taking up the desired course of study.
If you would like to take the admissions exam, you must first submit the application for admission to the admissions exam along with the necessary documents listed in the application to the Registrar's Office. You can submit the documents in person or via mail.
We recommend submitting the application and necessary documents as early as possible, as the application deadline to take the admissions exam ends April 1 for the winter semester and October 1 for the summer semester. After you submit the documents they must be reviewed by the Registrar's Office and the faculty, which can take many weeks.
Your documents will be reviewed, however, within six weeks after the deadline.
For information about the admissions exam, please contact the responsible departmental advisor.
The examination board decides the applicant's success based on the exam. Exam material is both general and subject specific. It contains both written and oral components; this can change depending on the characteristics of the chose course of study.
Exam performance is evaluated with a grade. The average grade is determined to one decimal place. The university will issue a certificate for the passed exam that contains the course of study and average grade. You will be notified if you did not pass the exam.
If you have passed the entrance exam, you may take up studies in the first core semester of the respective course of study at the examining university. Other possible necessary prerequisites for a course of study such as an obligatory pre-internship or particular preparatory training are still required after passing the exam.
Passing the exam does not entitle you to a university placement.
You can use the grade from your admissions exam to apply through RWTHonline or, if you are applying for medicine or dentistry, through Hochschulstart. Please note you must apply within the deadlines.
Process
An application for trial studies, for an entrance exam, or for admission to university studies on the basis of vocational career advancement or on the basis of vocational training or a vocation respective to the intended studies should be submitted in writing to the university and expressed the intended course of study. The required documentation and an illustration of the primary content of the vocational training and employment must be included upon RWTH Aachen's request.
Applicants participate in one of the advising meetings offered by the university. The meeting serves to determine whether an applicant is missing the necessary field specific or methodological knowledge. The advising meeting should also provide information on ways to compensate for the missing knowledge. The purpose of this is to help create a prognosis of success in the studies.
The respective examination board for the course of study you have selected will hold the admissions exam within six week after the application period has ended. Please contact the appropriate departmental advising for information about the admissions exam.
