Top Management Conference "Transformamus" in Zürich

"Shaping change. Top managers, entrepreneuers, and visionaries demonstrate how companies and markets can be successfully transformed." This is the motto of the first top management conference "Transformamus," which is being held on May 19 in Zürich.

A radicalism that has never before existed is shaping the innovation competition. Digitalization, globalization, disruption, and speed are central keywords. Innovative business models based on unique customer insight are what succeed in competition.

Subsequently value added chains are being restructured and are eroding the borders between sectors. Demands on company management are increasing. Transformamus offers talks, interactive sessions and seminars, controversies, and visions of the future. CEOs from global companies, entrepreneuers, renowned experts from practice, and leading management researchers from the University of St. Gallen, ETH Zürich, RWTH Aachen (represented by the Chair of Professor Daniel Wentzel), and HEC Lausanne will discuss how to successfully deal in a volatile, uncertain, and complex world. The following await you: Frank Briegmann (President Universal Music), Prof. Rupert Stadler (CEO AUDI AG), Philipp Justus (VP DACH & CEE Google), and Boris Collardi (CEO Julius Bär Group). Science & Business

Fire Burns Down WZL

A machine hall of the Laboratory of Machine Tools and Production Engineering at RWTH Aachen was destroyed in a fire during the night from February 4 to 5, 2016. No one was injured. The fire department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to other WZL buildings and surrounding buildings.

The Laboratory of Machine Tools and Production Engineering, the BLB, the RWTH management, and RWTH's facility management division have joined forces to secure the WZL's future viability. Currently the material damage is estimated at 100 million Euros. The costs of substitute buildings will be about 30 million Euros, the costs of new machines, lab facilities, and equipment are estimated at about 60 million Euros. Securing the full functionality of the WZL during the reconstruction period will cost about 10 million Euros.

BLB and RWTH quickly developed a plan for a possible permanent replacement of the space lost. The reconstruction of the hall is scheduled to take 18 to 24 months, at 4,200 square meters the new hall will be slightly bigger than the destroyed one. The land granted to WZL has not increased. Thus, WZL will ask the Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia to approve the construction of an additional hall at 3,000 square meters. In order to generate funding for the additional hall, lab equipment, and seed funding for research projects, a new WZL Foundation has now been established.

RWTH Innovation Award Honors Diverse Ideas

“Innovation draws on diverse and interdisciplinary ideas,” said Professor Malte Brettel, RWTH’s Vice-Rector for Industry and Business Relations, during the presentation of the Innovation Award at the RWTHtransparent event last week. With the Innovation Award, which is sponsored by Hilti AG, RWTH Aachen and Forschungszentrum Jülich annually recognize three outstanding projects that strongly contribute to the standing of the Aachen region as a major center for technology. The CarboBat team, headed by the Chair of Solid-State and Quantum Chemistry, Professor Richard Dronskowski, came in first place, receiving 5,000 Euros in prize money. The Cardiac Help team from Forschungszentrum headed by Professor Andreas Offenhäusser und Dr. Svetlana Vitusevich took second place. The third-place winners were Team Fedorov Project from Forschungszentrum Jülich, led by Dr. Alexey Yakushenko.

The projects "go4IT!" and "Promotions-CAFÉ" won the RWTH Gilles Prize for the Promotion of Women.

The prize, which is named after the first RWTH Aachen Equal Opportunities Officer, Brigitte Gilles, is to recognize projects which stimulate the interest of female school students in technical and natural science (STEM) courses of study and the number of female researchers. Furthermore, it supports projects that contribute to the improvement of women's teaching and working conditions at the University. Apart from relevance to the University, selection criteria include innovativeness and sustainability. This year, the prize money of 5,000 Euros goes to the projects “go4IT!” by the Learning Technologies Research Group and “Promotions-CAFÉ” by the Gender Team of the AlgoSyn graduate research training group in collaboration with the Computer Science department.
