Department of Computer Science Summer Fest

The Department of Computer Science invites all of its alumni to attend this year's Computer Science Summer Fest on Friday, June 17, at the Informatikzentrum.

The event begins at 1:30pm with the career fair. The stage program, which includes an award ceremony, entertaining keynote address, and the handing out of the certificates, will begin at 5pm in Aula 2. Festivities begin at 7pm. The event is catered and a DJ and live band will ensure a fun party atmosphere. You can find additional information on the Computer Science Summer Fest 2016 website.

Taster Course at the 2016 Rector's Cup

Alumni interested in trying golf out are invited to participate in a roughly two-hour taste course and putting competition at this year's Rector’s Cup Tournament on June 25, starting at 10am at the Mergelhof Golf Club near Gemmenich. The cost for the taster course is 20 Euros per participant. Clubs and other necessary golf equipment will be proivded. Participants should wear comfortable athletic clothing and gym shoes. As is tradition, the Rector's Cup and putting competition award ceremony round out the day during the evening BBQ at the club.

RWTH Alumni Meeting at Knorr-Bremse in Munich

The first get together this year for RWTH alumni in Munich and the greater area was held on May 9, 2016, at Knorr- Bremse. Alumna Stefanie Marekt from Marek&Jung welcomed the participants and greeted Dr. Ansgar Brockemeyer, the host of the meeting, on behalf of the RWTH alumni team with Öcher printen. Dr. Brockmeyer completed his doctoral studies at IDEA in 1997 and worked at Siemens for many years, responsible for the development of the ICEs. Since 2013 he has been CEO of Knorr-Bremse Rail Asia Pacific, whose offices are located in Hong Kong. During his short visit to Munich he took the time to give the alumni a closer look at Knorr-Bremse and brake technology.

RWTH Alumni Meeting at the Hamburg Hochbahn

About 20 participants attended this year's spring RWTH alumni meeting for the northern Germany region at the end of April at Hamburg Hochbahn. Alumnus Christoph M. Schröder, who made this event possible, greeted guests before Manfred Hester, head of the Grundsatzreferat Schienenfahrzeuge, gave a detailed overview of the Hamburger Hochbahn company in general and the field of rail vehicles in particular. After a theoretical introduction the alumni visited the workshops to see all of the vehicles, engines, bogies, and wheel sets. A final highlight was a tour of some historical vehicles.

Leif Kobbelt to Become Member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts

The North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities, and the Arts has accepted eight new members, including RWTH professor Leif Kobbelt. The Academy's president, Wolfgang Löwer, presented Kobbelt with the acceptance certificate during the annual celebration. By accepting Kobbelt, the Academy honors his outstanding scientific work.

Smart Anything Everywhere Workshop: Enhancing digital transformation in European SMEs

As part of its Digitising European Industry strategy, the European Commission – EC – supports innovation initiatives supporting companies in the area of digital value creation. Smart Anything Everywhere is an initiative, in which digital competence centers – research technology organizations or universities – give companies the opportunity to experiment with new digital technologies.

High-level speakers from the EC, from industry, competence centers and key players in this field have been invited by the EC to share their ideas on topics towards the re-industrialization of Europe and in particular the role of SMEs in a public workshop on June 13, 2016:

RWTH Aachen University is pleased that the workshop will feature its EU project TETRACOM and its success stories as best practice example on technology transfer of computing systems from research to industrial use. TETRACOM, coordinated by Professor Rainer Leupers, Institute for Communication Technologies and Embedded Systems, is a Coordination Action funded by the EC’s 7th Framework Programme, contract No. 609491.

"Current Trends in Technology and Innovation Management"

Together with its scientific collaborative partner, the Fraunhofer Academy, RWTH International Academy is hosting a free event for discussion and dialogue. The event at the Fraunhofer-Zentral in Munich will focus on "Current Trends in Technology and Innovation Management" and the resulting qualification needs for technical and managerial personnel and technology-oriented companies. "Industry 4.0 in Production" – New RWTH Certificate Course Begins November 2016

The five-day continuing education course Industry 4.0 in Production at RWTH Aachen is targeted towards professionals and managers and department and project heads, who implement industry 4.0 applications in their work, work at the cross-section of production and IT, or develop industry 4.0 strategies for companies. The certificate course encompasses an advanced skill build-up for analyzing, designing and optimizing production processes in intelligent and networked factory systems. Participants will learn to make industry 4.0 introductory and investment decisions and to realize the entire product life cycle through optimal value added chains.

New Fraunhofer High-Performance Center in Aachen

During the general assembly of the Fraunhofer Society in Essen, NRW Minister President Hannelore Kraft announced that the new Fraunhofer High-Performance Center “Connected Adaptive Production” is to be established in Aachen. As the new center is fully in line with the objectives of the Digital Agenda of the federal state government, the center is one of three to receive substantial funding from the State of NRW.

RWTH Receives Millions in Funding for Teaching and Learning

Again, RWTH Aachen succeeded in the “Quality Pact for Teaching“ initiative by the German federal and state governments: Parliamentary State Secretary Thomas Rachel, MdB, presented the funding certificates to Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg for the continuation of two projects. They were selected in the second phase of the initiative from the federal and state governments. Over the next four years, the “RWTH 2020 Excellent Teaching” program will receive 16.3 million Euros in funding to further improve supervision and guidance of students and offer more targeted, individualized advising services.

DHL Partners with RWTH in the Parcelcopter Project

As part of the Parcelcopter research and innovation project, between January and March 2016, DHL and its research partner RWTH Aachen have successfully tested the third generation of the parcelcopter in the Bavarian community of Reit im Winkl. DHL is the first package delivery provider that succeeded in integrating unmanned aerial vehicles into the delivery chain.

Cartography of the Spin-Orbin-Interaction

Semiconductor-based spinelectronics has been discussed as a possible alternative to the currently used charge-based information technology since about 1990. The renowned journal Nature Physics has recently published research from RWTH Aachen University led by Professor M. Morgenstern, which was supported by calculations from Professor E. Y. Sherman at University of the Basques Country. A possible roadblock for the realization of efficient devices was identified.



RWTH Scores in CHE Ranking 2016

The current university studies guide published in the German weekly newspaper "Die Zeit" confirms RWTH's excellent performance in research and teaching. The publication, which is specifically targeted at prospective university students, seeks to provide assistance with choosing the right course of study and the right university. Die Zeit has commissioned CHE, the Centre for Higher Education, with creating the ranking, which has analyzed German-language universities and ranked the disciplines taught at each institution in the top, mid-level, and bottom group.

RWTH's Worldwide Reputation Growing

THE Reputation Ranking, published by Times Higher Education, has once again confirmed that RWTH is among the top 100 universities in world with the best reputation. Placing in the Top 100 of the THE Ranking for the first time in 2014, RWTH Aachen has once again accomplished the feat this year. Only 20 other universities in continental Europe can claim the same. In contrast to the German trend, the Aachen university performed better than the previous year. In 2016 it moved up its ranking placing among 81 to 90.

2nd RWTH Classic Car Rally

RWTH Aachen University and innovative developments in mobility are unseparable. After its successful premiere last year the second RWTH Motor Day will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2016, starting at 8am in front of the Main Building and SuperC. The event will include a classic car rally. Registration closes June 24, 2016.

Blood Donation Dates at Couvenhalle

80 percent of all Germans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to secure the supply of blood for those in need. Students and interested Aachen residents have the possibility to donate blood on the RWTH campus. The University Hospital Aachen is organizing multiple blood drives in the next months at Couvenhalle, Kármánstraße 17 bis 19. The first is on Friday, June 10, 2016, 11:30am to 7pm.
