RWTH Now a Member of the Transformative Skills for Sustainability Network of Universities

We need smart sustainability solutions to ensure that future generations can also live in an environment that is ecologically, economically, and socially sound. Universities educate our future leaders and thus have a special responsibility for the transformation toward a sustainable society.

As the largest technical university in Germany, RWTH is committed to educating its students on the topic of sustainability. "In order to best equip our students with the sustainability skills they need to address the urgent challenges facing our society, it is particularly beneficial to share best practices across universities," says Professor Aaron Praktiknjo, Rector's Delegate for Sustainability. He is understandably delighted that RWTH has been selected for the Transformative Skills for Sustainability Network of Universities by the Stifterverband, the Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung, and the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt. The initiative supports the 20 member universities with funding of at least 200,000 euros. This shall aid in the development of innovative teaching and learning concepts for sustainability skills.

In close partnership with the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), RWTH will share its experiences from the SDG Campus with the network. The SDG Campus was initiated by TUHH and is a cross-university and cross-disciplinary digital offering in which students learn about and jointly develop approaches to achieving the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Professor Sönke Knutzen, who heads the SDG Campus on the part of the TUHH, highlights the importance of this network. "As a group of universities, we are facing the grand challenges for the future. Together, we want to provide the many brilliant minds of the younger generation with an educational experience that hasn't existed in this form before."
