SelfAssessment
RWTH Aachen self assessments are online advising processes for deciding what to study. Participation in one (rarely two) of these self assessments is mandatory. You can find which self assessment you need to take for this subject in the course of study description under "Prerequisites". You will need to show proof of participation in a subject specific self assessment in order to enroll (not to apply). You can print out the participation certificate yourself.
Dates and Deadlines
Curriculum
The vocational specialization of underground engineering can only be combined with the vocational specialization of structural engineering at RWTH. This study combination results in a broad-based basic education in the relevant contributory discipline to structural engineering as it covers mathematics, mechanics, surveying, structural design, building physics, solid construction, construction organization and occupational safety, building infrastructure, and construction site management. Furthermore, the degree program provides a sound education in subject-specific teaching and educational sciences. Topics covered in the subject-specific teaching modules are, for example, the basics of curriculum development in industrial-technical vocational specializations besides developing and designing teaching and learning arrangements.
The internships in the educational science degree programs – the orientation internship and the occupational area internship – complement the taught content.
Study at two universities in Aachen – your studies start earlier!
This degree program is offered in cooperation with FH Aachen University of Applied Sciences, where all the technical courses are taught. For our students, this means their studies start slightly earlier:
All courses at FH Aachen already start in the penultimate week of September, which means you will start earlier than at RWTH. Prospective students should contact the faculty's departmental academic advising service early on so they are best prepared for their studies.
Curricula and module handbook
The Teacher Training Center of RWTH provides curricula and module handbooks for all vocational specializations in teaching degree programs on a separate overview page.
Study Abroad Programs
The Faculty has several well-established ties with international partner universities, both in and outside Europe, facilitating collaborations in teaching and research as well as exchange programs such as ERASMUS+. Check the overview of all RWTH exchange programs. The Faculty of Civil Engineering's International Office or academic advisors can provide information on the feasibility of studying abroad.
Combination Possibilities
Vocational school teacher training includes studying two subjects. In the course of study Model I, both subjects are equally studied. In the course of study Model II, one of the subjects is studied in a broader scope.
Detailed information on both course of study models is available on this page.
Combination possibilities for Underground Engineering:
Underground engineering is one of the vocational minors and only offers the combination possibility in the course of study Model II: the unequally balanced combination with the vocational major of structural engineering. The contents of all vocational minors that can be combined with structural engineering are only studied from the third or fourth semester onwards. Changing between vocational minors is unproblematic within your first few semesters but should be discussed with your departmental advisor.

Prerequisites
The RWTH Aachen "Lehramt" Self Assessment is an enrollment prerequisite for this course of study. You will need to submit your participation certificate when you enroll, but not in order to apply.
Career Prospects
You can find information from the NRW Ministry of Schools about the career prospects for various fields of teaching through 2039/2040 in the brochure Prognoses on the Job Market for Teachers in North Rhine-Westphalia (de).
Master's Degree Prospects
After successfully completing the Bachelor degree, you can continue with the Master of Education (4 semesters). With this degree, you can start your teaching practice (This phase used to be called "Refendariat" instead of "Vorbereitungsdienst".)
Since your Bachelor degree opens up various futher education possibilities, you can - depending on your subject combination - persue other Master's programs. The respective exam board will decide whether or not you are qualified for a Master's that is not in the field of education.
Examination Regulations
Exam regulations regulate academic goals and prerequisites, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
General Regulations: Comprehensive Exam Regulations of RWTH Aachen Bachelor Teaching Training for Gymnasien, Gesamtschulen, and Berufskollegs
Special Regulations: Subject-Specific Exam Regulation for the Small Vocational Specialization in Underground Engineering (Part of the Exam Regulation of the Corresponding Big Vocational Specialization in Building Technology).
