The District of Preuswald
Exhibition on the topic "The District of Preuswald. Social and Architectural Space" in the winter semester 2023.
This semester, the Chair of Art History at the Faculty of Architecture at RWTH Aachen University is teaching and researching in the Preuswald area in Aachen's Bildchen district in cooperation with the Catholic University of Applied Sciences NRW. Built at the end of the 1960s, this former flagship project of modern housing development has suffered from a poor image for years. Even numerous measures, initiated by the residents, the district management of the city of Aachen and the housing associations, have hardly been able to change the public image.
Together with students, Dr. Birgit Schillak-Hammers from the RWTH Chair of Art History and Professor Markus Baum from the Catholic University of Applied Sciences NRW are investigating the architectural, historical and social features of the area. Among other things, a visual site analysis will be carried out with the help of photographs and film. On the one hand, this serves to provide a better understanding of the architecture and spatial structures of the area, and on the other, the media presentation is intended to enhance the image of this discredited location. Interviews with those responsible and residents should also provide a better insight into the realities of life for the people living in the area.
The results of this research work will be shown at the end of the winter semester in a jointly curated exhibition. Financed by the City of Aachen, a publication with texts and images by the students will also appear in spring 2024.
The vernissage will take place on January 25, 2024 at 6pm in the community center "Maria im Tann", Reimser Straße 59, 52074 Aachen. The exhibition runs between January 26 and February 14, 2024 and admission is free.
