With this Master's course of study RWTH offers the possibility to advance knowledge gained during Bachelor studies and to specialize in a particular field based on individual interests. The curriculum is flexibly structured and offers a modular system – instead of set focuses – in which mandatory and elective components can be particularly easily combined.
Characteristics of this RWTH Aachen Course of Study
The power economy is a highly complex branch of the economy, which calls for specialized knowledge in business administration, energy engineering as well as the law in order to meet the requirements of an ever-changing industry and economy. With its focus on energy engineering, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering therefore offers a course of study that concentrates on the technical, innovative field of expertise. This degree program systematically emphasizes its future graduates' ability to work at the junction of disciplines.
Energy engineering is one of the faculty's largest fields of competence. Its spectrum covers all the classic fields – from E-mobility to intercontinental energy supply, to renewable energies and energy or battery storage, and the interconnection and regulation of power electronic systems. The faculty is among leading institutions not least because of its relationship with strong research partners, such as: the E.ON Energy Research Center, the Forschungsgesellschaft Energie, the Forschungscampus Flexible Elektrische Netze as well as the Center for Ageing, Reliability and Lifetime Prediction of Electrochemical and Power Electronic Systems.
These and other national and international partnerships offer our Master's students and graduates many exciting opportunities to make their mark in research and development.
Degree Content
The curriculum is made up of a flexible system of mandatory, semi-elective and elective modules. The elective options enable students to individually shape and focus their studies while also ensuring broad scientific skills through the module catalogue's systematic guidance. Thus, it is the intelligent and well-balanced mix that makes the graduates of this degree program such sought-after professional newcomers in the diverse branches of the energy industry.
The course of study is comprised of nearly equal parts of engineering and business administration modules. Further modules are planned in the area of soft skills. The Master's Thesis, which is completed in either one of the two major areas, concludes the degree program.
Engineering Studies
In the field of engineering, the following modules must be taken:
- Faults in and stability of energy supply systems
- Energy Engineering internship
Furthermore, four Core Subjects and two Minors in the field of Energy Engineering must be selected from the respective catalogues. Further modules, for instance a seminar or project as well as a subject of choice complete the technical part of studies. The subject of choice can be selected from among the different areas of specialization in electrical engineering in order to gain interdisciplinary competencies and will not count towards your grades.
Business Administration Studies
In the field of business administration, a choice of the following specializations is offered:
- Sustainability and Corporations,
- Operations Research and Management,
- Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Marketing,
- Corporate Development and Strategy,
- General Business and Economics
Modules within the area of specialization can typically be freely chosen. Individual modules outside of your area of specialization can furthermore be taken in the general area of business administration. Besides regular courses – such as Business Valuation, Algorithmic Game Theory, Labour Law, or Quantitative Innovation Research – the School of Business and Economics each semester also offers a list of Modules on current topics, such as Accenture Campus Challenge, Siemens Venture Cup or Global Intercultural Marketing, which can also be selected, as long as they come from the respective area of specialization that is. Some of those modules can be taken as a project module, meaning that it is a module taught in a didactically different way.
Stay Abroad
Stays abroad are explicitly encouraged and will – as much as possible – be funded by the faculty and other participating institutes. The faculty maintains strong research and teaching partnerships with a variety of different European and non-European Universities, such as the Erasmus+-Program and the T.I.M.E. Double Degree Program. You can find more information about the various opportunities on the Faculty Webpage on Stays Abroad. Stays abroad that are individually organized by the students themselves are also almost always possible. If you want to get an overview of all the exchange programs offered at RWTH, please refer to the Moveonline Exchanges (de) database.
Prerequisites
The prerequisite for admission to the program is an initial university degree. The required academic background is described in the Exam Regulations and is guided by the degree content of the associated Bachelor's Degree Program in Business Administration and Engineering with a Specialization in Electrical Power Engineering at RWTH Aachen. The determination on whether or not the admissions requirements are met is made by the examination board.
Pre-Internship
A pre-internship lasting at least 12 weeks is required for admission to studies. You can find the guidelines in the examination regulation, Attachment 3. Students with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Engineering with a Specialization in Electrical Power Engineering from RWTH Aachen have completed this internship during the course of their Bachelor studies.
Career Prospects
Graduates from the Business Administration and Engineering Bachelor and Master's course of study with a Specialization in Electrical Power Engineering can work in many branches of the industry. Below are current fields of occupation for gradutes:

According to the VWI's 2011 job profile investigation, university studies lead to success in higher management levels more than an academic education at a university of applied science or a professional academy, from companies' perspective.
Module Handbook and Examination Regulations
The module handbook provides a description of all modules of a degree program and offers a comprehensive insight into the program contents.
The examination regulations are comprised of legally binding provisions on learning objectives, prerequisites for study, the course structure and processes, and examination procedures.
Regulations that generally apply to all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, including information on language proficiency requirements, can be found in RWTH's General Examination Regulations. These general regulations are further specified and complemented by the subject-specific examination regulations.
If two examination regulations are valid for a degree program during a transition phase, the most current version shall apply to students enrolling in the program for the first time.
Please note that only the German examination regulations are legally binding.
