The goal of this course of study of the RWTH Aachen Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is the broad training of mechanical engineers, who may be employed in all technical fields in the industry in research and development as well as in production and distribution.

The Master programs are scientific, research-oriented degree programs, aligned towards basic principles and methods. They enable students to be successful professionally successful over their entire career, because they are not restricted to learning current material, but also learn theoretical underlying fundamental concepts and methods, that last longer than current trends.

In our daily lives we are surrounded by a number of different products. One of these is the car, but there are also bottles or lawn mowers. These products have one thing in common: They are all produced on an industrial scale. To do this, technically complex and highly developed machines and processes are needed to ensure the quantities required by the market at a competitive price. It is not enough to simply manufacture production batches quickly and cost-effectively; they also have to meet the customer’s quality requirements. Production engineering deals with all areas of product manufacturing from the product planning, production machines and the manufacturing processes to quality planning and assurance. The program teaches processing methods, necessary machines, different testing methods and quality management systems, but also logistic and economic aspects.
Production engineering consists of the following specializations:

  • Corporate organization
  • Machine design and automation
  • Manufacturing and assembly
  • Surface and joining technology
  • Optical technologies

Degree Content

The three semester long course of study is broken down into two pieces. During the two semester examination period, students should complete all mandatory and elective modules. In the final and third semester, students independently work on a defined research topic and finish their Master thesis.

An outline of the degree content is given in the curriculum, which you can find on the faculty overview page of courses of study.

Prerequisites

A prerequisite for starting studies in a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements. On the faculty website you can find detailed information on how to apply.

Career Prospects

After successfully completing the Master's program, it is possible for students to apply for doctoral studies at one of the chairs in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. A profession in any technical field and almost any branch and sector of industry both domestically and abroad is possible. Futhermore, graduates are able to successfully work in integrative and interdisciplinary topic areas.

Examination Regulations

Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s Comprehensive Examination Regulation. Examination regulations are only published in German as they are legally binding.

Subject Specific Exam Regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
