In cooperation with the Aachen Dental Laser Center (AALZ) the RWTH International Academy offers the postgraduate program "Master of Science in Lasers in Dentistry". The course offers dentists the opportunity to become highly qualified specialists in the area of laser therapy. This program is recognized and accredited in Germany and the European Union, as well all countries that are signatories of the "Washington Accord". The two-year, executive master program "Lasers in Dentistry" comprises ten individual, self-contained modules. The program goal is the specialization of dental practitioners to become experts in laser therapy. This postgraduate, executive education course combines lectures, skill training sessions, live OPs, tutorials and practical workshops. Additionally, the study course is rounded off with extensive literature research, homework and laboratory work, patient treatment and documentation as well as practical experiments. Under the intensive supervision of post-doctorate employees, participants are introduced to successful and correct practical applications of lasers. This qualification innovatively links the disciplines of life-science, medicine and natural sciences. Research and teaching meet the highest quality standards and are provided in close interdisciplinary cooperation between dentistry and physics.
The four semester study program is divided in 10 modules. Here the experienced dentists get to know different laser systems from leading manufactures, covering all available wavelengths, during skill training sessions and practical exercises.
The study goals focus on the transfer of specialist knowledge that is at the forefront of laser dentistry. Treatment methods, the planning and preparation of treatments, the systematic organization of scientific and clinical findings, as well as independent, responsible conduct, are of central importance.
The primary study goals and content of the Master's program convey:
- An appreciation of the different optical models for the classification of light
- Knowledge of the physical principles and the technical implementation of a laser system
- An understanding of the dental principles associated with the application of laser systems of specific wavelengths
- Competent and specialist patient consultancy in all areas of laser and laser supported therapy
- Critical assessment of scientific and clinical findings in the field of laser dentistry
- The skill to employ dental laser systems in a clinically correct manner and in particular:
- the save and ethical application of lasers
- the clinically indicated application of lasers under consideration of indications and contraindications for the given wavelengths
- the supportive or independent role of lasers in therapy
- recognized therapy plans and treatment protocols
A prerequisite for starting this course of studies is that participants must be licensed dentists with a minimum of two years of experience in a clinic or dental practice. The examination board determines whether the candidate fulfills the entrance requirements.
The course attracts dentists from across the globe and participants are encouraged to network with their fellow students during numerous social events held throughout the course. Additional networking opportunities at international scientific conferences and through the alumni network, WALED, are also provided.
Exam regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains the description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
The Master course of studies is offered by the Faculty of Medicine.
