Electrical engineering and information technology greatly influence our everyday life with their technical innovations. Whether cell phones, microchips, batteries for electric cars, robot controls, energy supplies in wind power plants, or intelligent data compression during image transmission, all are equipment, parts, or process, that were invented with the help of electrical engineering and information technology.

The objective of this Master's course of study is to educate and train highly qualified, responsible engineers for management positions in teaching, research, industry, and society in the field of electrical engineering, information technology, and computer engineering.

RWTH is a leader in teaching and research in this field both nationally and internationally.

Its strength is the close relationship between research and teaching and a balance between scientific fundamentals and applications important to industry as well as intensive collaborations within RWTH Aachen, within the Jülich Aachen Research Alliance – JARA – and with associated institutes and external research partners.

Degree Content

The program consists of core and elective components which define the specific profile of the course of study.

This part of the curriculum is complemented by a large offering of labs, projects, and seminars. The elective component is broken down into either general or additional module groups. General modules are all mandatory elective subjects offered by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology. The additional modules offer an opportunity to take other courses at RWTH, including business courses, courses to develop soft skills, and language courses offered by the Language Center.

The Master's thesis is an independent, predefined scientific project to be completed in a fixed period of six months. It is concluded by an oral presentation and defense of the results.

The Master's program will be offering six different concentrations:

Electrical Power Engineering (EPEN)

Communications Engineering (COMM)

Computer Engineering (COMP)

Micro- and Nanoelectronics (MINA)

Biomedical Systems Engineering (BMSE)

Systems and Automation (SYAT)

Industrial internship

During the industrial internship of 18 weeks students are trained in solving current engineering problems at renowned industry partners. This is often the first step towards the student’s future professional career. Faculty´s detailed information about the industrial internship .

Prerequisites

A prerequisite for starting studies is a first university degree, with which the necessary background education can be proven, as determined in the exam regulations. The exam board determines whether it fulfills the entrance requirements.

On the faculty´s website you can find details about the admission requirements.

Module Handbook and Examination Regulations

The module handbook provides a description of all modules of a degree program and offers a comprehensive insight into the program contents.

The examination regulations are comprised of legally binding provisions on learning objectives, prerequisites for study, the course structure and processes, and examination procedures.

Regulations that generally apply to all Bachelor's and Master's degree programs, including information on language proficiency requirements, can be found in RWTH's General Examination Regulations. These general regulations are further specified and complemented by the subject-specific examination regulations.

If two examination regulations are valid for a degree program during a transition phase, the most current version shall apply to students enrolling in the program for the first time.

Please note that only the German examination regulations are legally binding.
