The mobility sector is currently facing the challenge of creating a climate-neutral future in the field. Researchers from Germany and abroad will present and discuss their findings on the development of new fuels from renewable energy and alternative carbon sources at the 7th International Conference Fuel Science – From Production to Propulsion. The event will be held from May 13 to 15, 2019 at Eurogress Aachen.
The three-day conference is being organized by the Cluster of Excellence Fuel Science Center – Adaptive Conversion Systems for Renewable Energy and Carbon Sources (FSC) at RWTH.
The event will address key topics, such as:
- Synthetic, alternative fuels from regenerative electricity and carbon dioxide
- Optimizing the combustion process and the exhaust gas after-treatment of renewable fuels
- The impact of renewable fuels on the environment, economics, and society
The conference will take a total-system perspective of value chains in order to fully assess their sustainability.
The interdisciplinary event is intended for international representatives of the field in either research or industry. The various different topics will be presented in talks and a poster session.
Professor Stefan Pischinger, spokesperson for the Cluster of Excellence alongside Professor Walter Leitner, declares: "The transportation sector consumes an extremely large amount of energy. I am convinced that renewably sourced fuels would, and indeed absolutely have to, greatly contribute to the energy transition. There are some specific situations where it is not possible to steer away from high-density liquid energy, but this should then be produced from renewable energy and carbon sources to facilitate climate-neutral mobility."
The Fuel Science Center (FSC) is developing the insights of the Tailor-Made Fuels from Biomass – TMFB, a previous Cluster of Excellence that received funding until December 2018, with an interdisciplinary approach. Since January 2019, FSC has been researching innovative and promising ways of converting renewable energy into high-density liquid energy sources – bio-hybrid fuels – by using biomass-based resources and carbon dioxide to benefit the mobility sector.
The Cluster of Excellence is developing insights and research methods in its aim of eventually replacing the engine-based combustion of fossil fuels with adaptive production and propulsion systems that are based on renewable energy and carbon sources under dynamic system boundaries.
