|Monthly Expenditure||Minimum Costs per Month|
|Accommodation and associated costs, such as electricity, heat, water, Rundfunkgebühr (TV license fee), and internet||approximately 470 euros|
|Food and general expenses||approximately 400 euros|
|Health insurance||approximately 110 euros|
|University fees (monthly proportion of the student body and social contribution fee)||approximately 52 euros per month|
|Book and materials||approximately 100 euros (but this depends on the chosen course of study)|
|Total||approximately 1,132 euros per month|
Please also note that a single person must prove a minimum monthly income of 861 euros to the Immigration Office in Aachen in order to have their residence permit extended. The minimum amount you need to have at your disposal to cover your living expenses for one year in Germany is 10,332 euros. (Status: January 2021)
With the increase in the BAföG maximum rate from 861 euros per month to 934 euros per month, which will take effect in the winter semester of 2022/23, the amount for the proof of financial support to be provided by international students will automatically increase in line with this, see section 2, paragraph 3, sentence 5 of the Residence Act. The foreigners authorities can demand this amount for a new application for a residence title in Germany or for an extension as early as September.
The embassies and consulates follow the instructions of the Federal Foreign Office; here, the amount for the proof of financing per blocking account, which has risen accordingly from 10.332 euros per year to now 11,208 euros per year, will be applied on January 1, 2023 when the visa is issued, see the Federal Foreign Office website.
The social contribution fee for winter semester 2022/23 amounts to 310.15 euros.
