Unseen Victims – Migrants Making Their Way Through Mexico

A travel photography exhibition titled "Unseen Victims – Migrants Making Their Way Through Mexico" from Amnesty International will be shown at the former Couven Secondary School (Couven-Gymnaisum) on Kármánstr. 17-19, Aachen, Germany, from May 7 to May 25, 2012.

The project’s initiator is Judith Schößer of the Chair of Intercultural and Romance Studies, under the supervision of Professor Angelica Rieger. Approximately 30 photographs about migration and its impact on Mexico can be seen from Monday to Friday while the exhibition lasts.

The exhibition exposes the problematic situation of Central and South Americans, who have left their homelands for the USA, travelling on the roofs of freight trains. Driven by the desire to work and provide for their families, they must cross Mexico to arrive at their destination. The exhibition depicts the history of these transmigrants in a series of striking images and gives insight into the dangers of such a journey, which come to an end primarily by criminal gangs of youth in Mexico.

The exhibition opens on Tuesday May 8, 2012, at 7:15 p.m. at the former Couven-Gymnasium on Kármánstr. 17-19. Judith Schösser and Professor Angelica Rieger will give the inauguration. Wolfgang Grenz will represent Amnesty International.

After the opening, the film Sin Nombre will be screened alongside Asalto al Sueño and Which Way Home (May 15 and 22 at 7:15 p.m.), which also address migration in Central and South America.
