20/09/2012

Not only has the TU9 Recruitment Campaign for Young Engineers been selected as a “Chosen Landmark 2012” in the 365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas competition, it has now been named the national winner in the “Education” category. Representatives from the TU9 initiative were presented with the prize during an award ceremony held at Deutsche Bank headquarters in Frankfurt.

Since 2006, the "365 Landmarks in the Land of Ideas“ competition has been run jointly by the “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative and Deutsche Bank. Each year, 365 outstanding projects and ideas receive recognition for their contribution to the future competitiveness of Germany. In the “Selected Landmarks” section of the competition, an expert jury has now selected one winner each in the categories economy, culture, science, environment, education, and society.

The Recruitment Campaign

With this campaign, TU9, the consortium of the leading universities of technology in Germany, seeks to address the current and future shortage of engineering experts. Also, the campaign seeks to recruit international students in the STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. In order to attain this goal, TU9 is present at several student recruitment fairs worldwide. Also, TU9 delegates visit German schools abroad to promote STEM degree programs at German universities.

Furthermore, outstanding school students from abroad are given the opportunity to participate in a “STEM taster week” program: they are invited to come to Germany for a week to attend STEM classes go get an idea about the respective degree programs. These initiatives turn out to be fruitful, as there is a significant increase in international students in STEM subjects.

Professor Hans Jürgen Prömel, TU9 Vice President and President of TU Darmstadt, is very pleased about the award: “We are glad to be a national winner in the ‘365 Landmarks’ competition. Germany’s universities of technology are our bridges to the world, they bring to us a number of talented young people who are needed by business and industry. In this way we contribute to making Germany ready for the future, countering the negative demographic developments. The award is a great recognition of for the TU9 STEM recruitment initiative, and it is an incentive for us to continue on this path."
