In accordance with the latest, currently valid, version of Section 67 Paragraph 1 of the North Rhine-Westphalia Higher Education Act, or HG for short, a doctorate is proof of the ability to carry out independent scientific work that goes beyond the general study objective in accordance with section 58, paragraph 1 HG. This ability is determined on the basis of a scientific written work, or dissertation, as well as further examinations. The doctoral degree is awarded upon completion of doctoral studies.

Enrollment in doctoral studies is restricted to twelve semesters. This period can only be extended with the approval of the doctoral committee. You can find further information on this topic under Doctoral Studies.
