Bioplastics – Sustainable Synthesis and Recycling

Bioplastics are made from renewable raw materials, and in the best of cases, they are biodegradable. They are suitable for a wide range of applications, ranging from simple food packaging to laptop cases and even biocompatible shoulder bones. In the packaging sector, bioplastics could replace more than 30 percent of conventional non-degradable plastics to reduce the impact of waste plastics entering the environment. On the other hand, bioplastics are too valuable to be used only once, so mechanical and chemical recycling opens up new opportunities for a circular economy for bioplastics.

Bioeconomy – Sustainable Use of Biological Resources

Today, many everyday products are manufactured based on petroleum. For this reason, biorefineries are of key importance for the transition to renewable raw materials. In biorefineries, biomass is processed into platform chemicals and other products. Compared to petroleum refineries, biorefineries have to cope with special challenges, such as heterogeneity and complexity of the raw materials used, which range from plants to residual streams from agriculture and forestry to waste from the food and paper industry. In the biorefinery of AVT, the Aachen Chemical Processing institutes, energy and resource-efficient processes are developed to provide the basis for the competitive production of products from renewable raw materials.
