First Alumni Meeting of the M.E.S. Alumni Network

A meeting for graduates of the RWTH Aachen Master course of study European Studies will take place for the first time on April 19, 2013, at the Center for European Integration Studies, ZEI for short, in Bonn, Walter-Flex-Straße 3. The topic "The Future of Europe" is one of the focuses of a panel discussion. All former and current "M.E.S. ers" are welcome to attend this event. Tour of DEUTZ Technical Center

As part of the RWTHextern program, the Alumni team is inviting alumni to participate in a tour of the motor museum at DEUTZ technical center in Cologne-Porz on April 26. The tour begins at 1pm, departure from Aachen at 11am. The meeting point is the main entrance of the SuperC, Templergraben 57. Due to the restricted number of participants allowed, registration is required via email to alumni@rwth-aachen.de.

Annual Meeting of RWTH Alumni in North America

The RWTH Alumni Club of North America invites all alumni to attend the ninth annual meeting. The meeting will take place from May 2 to 5, 2013, in Washington, D.C. You can find more details and registration information in the invitation letter.

Our alumna Andrea Noska has organized this meeting. Ms. Noske studied metallurgy at RWTH Aachen and currently works at the German Embassy in Washington. She has put together an attractive program for this three-day event. The program includes a visit to the Library of Congress and the Capitol. We thank Ms. Noske for planning and organizing this event!

Deutsche Gesellschaft für Akustik Honors RWTH Professor

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Janina Fels was honored with the Lothar Cremer Prize by the Deutschen Gesellschaft für Akustik e.V. in Merano. Fels has been Junior Professor of Medical Acoustics at RWTH Aachen since October 2012. Since December 2012 she has also worked as a visiting researcher at the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine, Structural and Functional Organization of the Brain (INM-1) at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The 35 year-old studied electrical engineering at the Aachen university and completed her doctoral studies at the Institute of Technical Acoustics. She completed research stays in the USA and Denmark.

Matthias Jarke Appointed to CONNECT Advisory Forum

RWTH Professor Matthias Jarke has been appointed to the newly formed CONNECT Advisory Forum, CAF for short, which is to advise the EU commission’s General Directorate for Communications Networks, Content and Technology or CONNECT. Connect is responsible for the implementation of the “Digital Agenda for Europe” project, initiated by the commission’s Vice President Neelie Kroes. The founding meeting recently took place in Brussels. Matthias Jarke is Head of the Chair of Computer Science 5, Information Systems and Databases, and Chairman of the Fraunhofer Information and Communication Technology Group.

Aachen Entrepreneurs Receive Award

The RWTH Aachen start-up "terminbuddy" was successful at the nationwide "IKT Innovative Entrenpeneurship Competition", which had 300 participants. The Aachen team won first place in the category "Internet Based Services for Business". Using the terminbuddy application, customers can book their appointments at any time online for service providers such as hair salons, doctors’ offices, and restaurants. The three young entrepreneurs offer service providers a software application for their appointment and resource planning which their customers can access via their web browsers or smartphone apps.

Breast Cancer Marker Identified in Bloodstream

To detect breast cancer early on and to make the screening as patient-friendly as possible – this is the aim of an Aachen research group headed by Professor Edgar Dahl. The researchers of the Molecular Oncology work group at the Institute of Pathology at University Hospital Aachen have now identified two so-called tumor suppressor genes: with the help of a special process, these genes can be detected in the bloodstream as markers of breast cancer. The researchers have now published the results of a first study in the scientific journal “Breast Cancer Research”.

Natural Sciences Ranked Excellent in CHE Study

The Centre for Higher Education Development, CHE for short, has published the “Diverse Excellence 2012” university rankings list, which provides an assessment of the natural science disciplines at German universities and universities of applied sciences. The study ranks RWTH Aachen to be nationally leading in several disciplines.

Investor and Architect Team for the Integrative Production Technology Research Cluster

The RWTH Aachen Campus GmbH announced its decision on the investor and architect teams for the Integrative Production Technology research cluster, to be located on the University’s new research campus. In a Europe-wide selection process, the investor Capricorn Development GmbH & Co. KG, Düsseldorf, and the architectural practice Henn Architekten, Munich, were chosen. Within the Integrative Production Technology cluster, new methods and technologies will be investigated along the value chain of manufacturing companies. The key research areas of the cluster will include electric vehicle production, tool making, and lightweight construction.

Planning Theory and Urban Development: Gentrification? Urban Transformation and Social Consequences

The PT-Congress 2013 on June 20, takes up the current debate on gentrification to discuss socio-spatial transformation processes. An interdisciplinary panel of practitioners and researchers will provide an impartial and cross-sectional view on contemporary urban development and the controversial dispute about gentrification.
