Award-winning Project Redefines the Internet
An EU-funded PURSUIT project has been awarded a prize at the Future Internet Assembly (FIA) in Dublin. The project has studied new information-centric networking paradigms as a way to innovate future Internet architectures that could meet current challenges on growing traffic, need-oriented multimedia applications, and increasing security demands. The PURSUIT project received the Future Internet Award for its outstanding contributions to redefining the existing Internet design in order to give users more control over their data while significantly enhancing broadband connections.
The Institute for Networked Systems (iNETS) at RWTH Aachen University participated in this joint European project coordinated by Aalto University, Finland. The success of the research project was built upon an earlier spearheading PSIRP project, in which iNETS also took part. The Aachen team was involved in the project from the beginning and participated in the building of the international research team and the successful funding negotiations.
In the course of the project, several prototype systems were set up. These Blackadder and Blackhawk prototypes allow peers in a network to find each other according to their information interests. The prototypes have been setup in an international test bed, spanning across the globe, including European partners and also collaborators in Japan and the USA. One of the prototype sites is Aachen.
The award was announced in the closing session of the 10th Future Internet Assembly (FIA) held in Dublin, Ireland. Future Internet Awards promotes the best European national and regional future Internet initiatives. Funded by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme for Research and Development, PURSUIT is one of the leading examples of European future networks research.
The partners in this 5.2 million euro project included Aalto University, the University of Cambridge, RWTH Aachen University, Athens University of Economics and Business, Ericsson, the University of Essex, the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas, and CTVC.
