Public Lecture: CO2 as a Raw Material for the Chemical Industry?

30/09/2019

The speaker, RWTH professor Walter Leitner, has been selected for the final round of the "Deutscher Zukunftspreis" award.

Is it possible to use carbon dioxide as a raw material for chemical products or even fuels? Science may take its cue from nature – in photosynthesis, for example, carbon dioxide is chemically converted into glucose with the help of sunlight.

On Monday, October 7, as part of the “In Focus” lecture series hosted by RWTHextern, Professor Walter Leitner will give a talk on the topic of “CO2 – A Greenhouse Gas as a Raw Material for Chemistry.” Leitner is Chair of Technical Chemistry and Petrochemistry at RWTH and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion, where he heads the Molecular Catalysis department.

Leitner and two researchers from Covestro AG are among the finalists for the Deutscher Zukunftspreis, which will be officially awarded in November 2019.

In addition to explaining the technologies that are required to harness CO2 as a carbon source for chemical products or fuels, Leitner will also provide insights into the important role of basic research in driving innovation.

The event is scheduled to begin at 7pm in the Ford Hall, SuperC, Templergraben 57. Admission is free of charge, no registration is required.

Please note that the public lecture will be given in German.
