New Collaborative Research Center at RWTH Aachen
The German Research Foundation (DFG) has approved twelve new Collaborative Research Centers at German universities, which will receive funding of 94 million euros over the next three years and nine months.
RWTH Aachen University will see the establishment of the new trans-regional research center "Oxy-Flame – Development of Methods and Models to Describe the Reaction of Solid Fuels in an Oxy-Fuel Atmosphere."
Despite Germany's conversion to sustainable energy, fossil fuels such as coal and gas will continue to be used, so the goal is to reduce CO2 emissions for environment protection purposes. In this context, so-called "carbon capture and storage" methods come into play, such as oxy-fuel combustion, which is one of the most promising methods for carbon sequestration: instead of using air, the fuel is burned using a mixture of oxygen and flue gas.
The aim of the Collaborative Research Center is to thoroughly investigate this technology. Apart from RWTH Aachen, Ruhr-Universität Bochum and TU Darmstadt will participate in the project. Spokesperson for the research center is Professor Reinhold Kneer from the Institute of Heat and Mass Transfer at RWTH Aachen.
