Senior officials and high-level spectrum experts from 9 different countries visited the Institute for Networked Systems at RWTH Aachen University on June 20. The visit was a part of a joint European Union and Southeast Asian (ASEAN) Telecommunication Regulators' Council (ATRC) meeting. This high level delegation and their hosts from the European Commission were given a tour and presentations at the Institute for Networked Systems (iNETS).
The visit and work done at iNETS were chosen by EU hosts as an example to illustrate and highlight the excellent wireless communications and spectrum related research and development done in Europe. The work done at iNETS has strongly focused on future wireless access systems, dynamic spectrum access and sharing schemes, and there has been a particularly strong link between research and development results at iNETS and regulatory bodies thanks to the partial funding provided by the 7th EU Framework Program, and the facilities, cooperation, and funding secured by UMIC Research Centre at RWTH Aachen University as a part of the German Excellence Initiative.
The ASEAN ATRC group visit and discussion panel was co-chaired by Le Van Tuan, Deputy Director General of Authority of Radio Frequency Management from Ministry of Telecommunications of Vietnam, and Ruprecht Niepold, the special adviser on Radio Spectrum Policy for European Union Director General (CONNECT). The visit was hosted at the Institute for Networked Systems by Professor Petri Mähönen and Professor Marina Petrova. The special spectrum assessment tool that was developed in a recently finished research and development project was presented for interested guests as a part of the visit by Dr Ljiljana Simic.
