Science in Exile

In many parts of the world, scientists and scholars are in danger: Their home countries are blighted by war, their freedom of research is curtailed, or they are persecuted. The Philipp Schwartz Initiative helps researchers who have fled their countries to find their feet at German universities and research institutions. “Science in Exile” challenges the common stereotypes of refugees from a war-ravaged region and explores how recent violence in Syria, Yemen, and Iraq has threatened the lives of four researchers, forcing them to suspend their work and flee their homelands. The film highlights the lives of women and men with years of training and experience who are struggling to find a place in a new country – a safe place where they can continue their research and make a scientific contribution.

The screening is followed by a panel discussion with a focus on the Philipp Schwartz Initiative. We will talk with RWTH professors who successfully applied for funding to offer a perspective to colleagues who had to flee their homelands.

This event is hosted by the RWTH International Office and Catholic University Community and takes place on Wednesday, November 6, 2019, at 8pm at the Catholic University Community's meeting space, Pontstraße 72, Aachen. The film is in English, the panel discussion in German.
