RWTH Looks Forward to New Students

02/10/2013

" We look forward to the over 7000 new students and welcome them to RWTH Aachen and Aachen," emphasized Univ.-Prof. Dr. Aloys Krieg, RWTH Vice-Rector for Teaching. He adds: " The university has prepared for the double class cohort and the related higher number of enrollments for three years; we are well prepared! The involvement of students, who are active during the orientation week, plays a great role. The goal is to ensure a good start. New students should be saying: 'That's my university!'"

Orientation Week from October 7 to 11, 2013

First, RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg will welcome the new students. Then they will be split up among the 100 tutors based on course of study. The student representative councils sought them out for this voluntary work during the orientation week. The students in the councils received a great deal of information and suggestions during trainings. This also includes games to get know each other, since the goal of the orientation week is to break down anonymity.

Traditionally there is also a city rally held by the student councils. This year it will be on Wednesday, October 9, 2013. More than 8000 people will flood the areas around the cathedral, city hall, and Audimax around Aachen. New students will have to prove their knowledge and skill at numerous stations. In collaboration with the city, this year will be the first where mobile toilets will be available in the city center. The city of Aachen has assumed responsiblity for the waste disposal. A coordination center in the RWTH SuperC is available at any time and will work closely together with the police and the public order office.

"Experience shows that these days are very important for first-year students. They typically remain with the tutor group till the very last day. We expect that the city rally will take place without incident. However, if there are problems we can be reached via phone at any time at 0241 80 90799“, reports RWTH student Jakob Onken, Head of the Orientation Week Coordination Team.
