On November 16, 2013, Professor Gero von Plessen from the RWTH Physics Department will give a presentation in the "Understanding Physics!“ lecture series, titled “Magical Colors - How Electron Oscillations are Becoming Visible.”

The colors of most objects originate in the oscillations of electrons. These oscillations can be “triggered” in atoms and molecules through light radiation, and they can radiate light themselves. If the oscillations have a certain frequency, the emitted light is perceived to have color by the human eye.

The lecture seeks to explain how colors are generated and perceived, what the colors tell us about the properties of the atoms and molecules, and how one can tailor electron oscillations to use them for technological purposes.

Another interesting topic is how the nanotechnological production of artificial “atoms” makes it possible to make objects invisible for the human observer.

  • Time: November 16, 2013, 11 am, Lecture Hall Fo2
  • Location: Kármán Auditorium, Eilfschornsteinstraße 15

Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend! Entrance is free of charge.
