Description

Writing well—or at least well enough to get published—is often the basis for successfully pursuing a professional scientific career. In most fields, writing in English is essential for gaining international recognition of one's research. While writing in general and writing in English in particular are important parts of academic life, many researchers are unsure about what is considered "good writing," what makes a paper written in English successful, or how the writing and publication process can best be managed.

Objective

In this workshop, you will train how you can communicate your research most effectively. We will practice important strategies for writing English sentences, paragraphs, and texts that meet the expectations of readers, reviewers, and editors alike. By the end of the workshop, you will be aware of the fundamental criteria for good scientific writing in English and be able to prepare your own texts more easily for publication.

Content

In this 2-day workshop, you will learn to

  • apply the principles of “good” scientific writing

  • write clearly and concisely

  • avoid common grammatical errors

  • link ideas to make your text flow easily

  • write well-focused paragraphs

  • craft powerful abstracts

  • employ self-editing skills

Target Audience

postdocs, academic staff, juniorprofessors

Further Information on Target Audience

The course is mainly intended for postdoctoral researchers or Ph.D. holders who have already published and are interested in improving their academic English writing skills. Please note that the workshop will be taught entirely in English.
