RWTH’s International Office can award different study scholarships and a travel costs grant as part of the DAAD program "NRWege ins Studium - Integration von Flüchtlingen an Hochschulen in Nordrhein-Westfalen". The program, which seeks to help people with a refugee status go to university in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

 

Types of Scholarships

Residence Scholarships

The following residence scholarships are offered for particularly talented students of RWTH who have a refugee status and are highly motivated and likely to succeed in their studies:

  • The Study Entry Scholarship has a maximum funding period of six months and is intended to support students in their first course semester.
  • The Study Scholarship has a maximum funding period of twelve months and is intended to support students from their second course semester.
  • The Final Study Phase Scholarship has a maximum funding period of six months and is intended to support students who are in their final or penultimate study semester.

Travel Costs Grant

Prospective students with a refugee status can apply for assistance with travel costs to the university for participation in language and subject preparation courses. Send an application for the travel costs grant by .

Target Group of the Residence Scholarships

If you have a refugee status and fulfill the following requirements, you are welcome to apply:

  • you are enrolled at RWTH or have received admission to study at RWTH
  • you are in the initial, intermediate, or final phase of your studies
  • you have good German language skills
  • you are suffering serious financial hardship and can prove this
  • you have received an expert testimony from your departmental advisor
  • you can prove a good academic performance during your studies or in your preparatory courses
  • you can achieve a good academic performance with the help of the scholarship
  • you are residing in Germany during the final phase of your studies.

Application Periods

Residence Scholarships

Apply from July 1 to August 31, 2020 for:

  • the Study Entry Scholarship: funding in winter semester 2020/2021
  • the Study Scholarship: funding in winter semester 2020/2021 and summer semester 2021
  • the Final Study Phase Scholarship: funding in winter semester 2020/2021

Travel Costs Grant

The travel costs grant is awarded on an individual basis.

Selection

Scholarship holders are selected by a commission consisting of representatives of the administration, the faculties, and the student body of RWTH.

The selection is based on various criteria, such as academic performance and financial need. There is no entitlement to a scholarship. The amount of the monthly stipend depends on the type of scholarship and the already existing financial means of the scholarship holder and will be determined on an individual basis.

The selection for recipients will take place in September 2020. Scholarship holders will be informed of the result of the selection procedure in writing by the end of September 2020.

Study Entry Scholarship

  1. Application form outlining your financial situation. Please submit copies as evidence in accordance with the information on your financial situation specified in the application form.
  2. CV in table form
  3. Letter of motivation  – one page max
  4. Copy of your residence title (both sides) as proof of your recognized refugee status in Germany
  5. Copies of your original school reports or academic achievements and the German or English translation
  6. Proof of your current German knowledge
  7. If applicable, proof of your achievements in the preparatory courses for your degree
  8. Current certificate of enrolment (if already enrolled at RWTH, this can be submitted later)
  9. Bank statements from the last four weeks
  10. If receiving state benefits (e.g. BAföG) or scholarships from public funds, the appropriate certificates for this must be enclosed. Please note that these benefits and scholarships will be credited when awarding the NRWege scholarship, resulting in your monthly stipend amount being adjusted.
  11. If you receive an additional income, please submit a copy of your work contract.

Study Scholarship

  7. Certificate of study and examination performance with current grade point average. You can request this from the ZPA or download it from RWTHonline. Medical students can obtain a list of grades from the dean's office. If this is not available, it can be submitted by the end of October.

Final Study Phase Scholarship

  1. Application form outlining your financial situation. Please submit copies as evidence in accordance with the information on your financial situation specified in the application form.

  4. Copy of your residence title (both sides) as proof of your recognized refugee status in Germany
  5. Proof of your current German knowledge
  6. Current certificate of enrolment
  7. Certificate of study and examination performance with current grade point average. You can request this from the ZPA or download it from RWTHonline access. Medical students can obtain a list of grades from the dean's office.
  8. An expert testimony from your departmental advisor / details of your study progress and achievements
  9. Registration for your final thesis – via ZPA or a provisional registration from your faculty/supervisor
  10. Bank statements from the last four weeks
  11. If receiving state benefits (e.g. BAföG) or scholarships from public funds, the appropriate certificates for this must be enclosed. Please note that these benefits and scholarships will be credited when awarding the NRWege scholarship, resulting in your monthly stipend amount being adjusted.
