Program Description
The M.Sc. Smart Production Engineering (M.Sc. SPE) is a highly interdisciplinary Master's program with the option to specialize in one of three study tracks, representing the latest in production engineering. New manufacturing processes to improve productivity, flexibility and sustainability must be smart and networked in secure the future and competitiveness of production. This program is a direct response to the major impact digitalization and Industry 4.0 had on the production technology in the past ten years and will qualify students in the fields of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science.
Degree Content
The M.Sc. SPE is a full-time study program on campus in Aachen, leading to a M.Sc. degree
to be awarded from RWTH Aachen University. Students can choose between three study tracks, each on its one leading to a tailored education and a very individual profile as production engineer:
- Additive Manufacturing
- Smart Factory
- E-Mobility Production
They learn about topics such as model-based systems engineering, agile production and progressive automation and control production processes in real time with 5G technology.
Students also analyze process chains for additive manufactured components and develop flexible production technologies like selective laser melting. They acquire knowledge about vehicle component production like powertrain or transmission, manufacturing performance and identify process bottlenecks. For more detailed program information visit RWTH International Academy, the course of study website.
Prerequisites
A prerequisite for starting this course of studies is a first university degree which proves the necessary background education as determined in the examination regulations. Furthermore, a GRE certificate with the min. scores of 145 VR, 160 QR, 3 AW as well as practical work experience of at least 6 months are mandatory admission requirements. The examination board determines whether the applicant fulfills the entrance requirements.
Career Prospects
The industry urgently needs interdisciplinary trained experts to shape the digital transformation in companies. After successfully completing the Master's program, graduates of the M.Sc. SPE will be able to work in advanced positions as Design Engineer, Project Engineer or Quality Engineer in industries such as Automotive, Mobility, Consulting or Logistics.
Graduates will know how to design, direct, optimize, and monitor production processes, develop and enhance serial production lines and assembly systems while also identifying digitalization potentials in industrial production processes. After being awarded the RWTH Aachen University Master's Degree, graduates will be qualified for doctoral studies as well.
Examination Regulations
Regulations that apply for all Bachelor and Master courses of study as well as detailed information about the necessary documentation of required language skills can be found in RWTH’s General Examination Regulations.
Subject-Specific Examination Regulations regulate academic goals, the course of study layout, and exam procedures. The appendix to the regulations contains a description of the modules, from which the course of study is composed.
Some regulations have been translated or are currently being translated into English. Please note, however, that examination regulations are officially published in German and this is the only legally binding version!
Faculty
The M.Sc. SPE is a highly interdisciplinary program led by worldwide renowned Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering of RWTH Aachen University, at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.
For Your Information
RWTH Aachen offers some of its courses of study in collaboration with other (private) institutions. They are not part of the courses of study under public law, and thus are not governed by legal guidelines, e.g. university placement allocation. Some have tuition fees and require a period of professional experience.
Information about prerequisites, application processes, the university placement allocation process, and academic content is available from the host institution, to which you are applying.
