New RWTH Rectorate Appointed
RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg assumed office for the second time on August 1, 2014. Together with the three current Vice-Rectors, Malte Brettel, Doris Klee, and Aloys Krieg, and Chancellor Manfred Nettekoven, he will continue to head the university for the next four years. Univ-Prof. Dr. Rudolf Mathar will be joining the Rectorate, also effective August 1, 2014. The Chair of Theoretical Information Technology will serve as Vice-Rector for Research and Structure, succeeding Univ.-Prof. Dr.med. Rolf Rossaint.
Univ.-Prof. Dr.rer.pol. Malte Brettel will remain Vice-Rector for Industry and Business Relations; Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Doris Klee will continue to serve as Vice-Rector for Human Resources Management and Development; and Univ.-Prof. Dr.rer.nat. Aloys Krieg will remain Vice-Rector for Teaching. The new vice-rector and the current vice-rectors were approved in the most recent RWTH Senate session. Previously, they were elected by the Board of Governors.
Farewell to Rolf Rossaint
Current and former representatives from the university administration and numerous companions came to celebrate Univ.-Prof. Dr.med. Rolf Rossaint's (fifth from left) 12 years as vice-rector and honor his extraordinary services. Rossaint assumed the role of Vice-Rector for Research and Structure in September 2008. He had previously served as Vice-Rector for Financial and Building Affairs in the Rectorate of Burkhard Rauhut.
Rossaint holds the RWTH Chair of Anaesthesiology. He studied medicine at the University of Düsseldorf and was Chief Physician at the Rudolf Virchow Hospital at the Free University of Berlin before coming to RWTH Aachen. RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg, Chancellor Manfred Nettekoven, and Vice-Rectors Malte Brettel, Doris Klee, and Aloys Krieg surprised the doctor with a small metamorphosis: They quickly put on blue scrubs and surgical masks, "to be like Professor Rossaint just for once."
