New Students Want to Get to Know the City and University

01/10/2014

RWTH Aachen's first-year students are beginning a new life chapter on Monday, October 6, 2014, namely university studies. Many know nothing about Aachen, the University, or their fellow students. This should change with the help of the so-called orientation week. A team of students has organized the event with the support of the university administration.

First, RWTH Rector Ernst Schmachtenberg will welcome the new students. Then they will be separated by course of study and then further into small groups of 15. Each group is supervised by two tutors during the orientation week. These are students in higher semesters, who were recruited and trained by the students representative councils for this honorary work.

City Rally on October 8, 2014

A city rally conducted by the student representative councils traditionally takes place during the orientation week. This year the rally will be on Wednesday, October 8, 2014. During the rally, new students must prove their knowledge and skill at 130 stations. More than 8,000 people will be out and about between the University Sports Center and Main Building as well as the cathedral and city hall. For the first time there will be a central event location on the Talbot parking lot behind the Main Building: Aside from game stations and food and beverage stands, there will be a large stage with a live program.

The streets Templergraben, Kármán- und Schinkelstraße will be closed off to traffic for the entire day. Residents and shops located within and around the rally area were informed prior to the event.
