First Alumni Meeting of the Tsinghua RWTH University Partnership

06/11/2014

On Saturday, October 18, 2014, the Department of Industrial Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing, held its first alumni meeting in Germany. The event took place at RWTH Aachen, which has a longstanding partnership with the renowned Chinese university.

Since 2001, RWTH Aachen and Tsinghua University, one of the most prestigious universities in China, have been offering a dual degree Master’s course of study in Automotive Engineering and Industrial Engineering.

Each year, up to 30 students have the chance to complete a part of the course of study at the partner university. Upon successful completion of the program students will receive degree certificates from both universities. So far, more than 180 RWTH students have studied at Tsinghua’s Department of Industrial Engineering, while 144 students from Tsinghua University came to study at RWTH’s Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Alumni Meet at RWTH

About 50 graduates of the dual degree program traveled to Germany in order to participate in the alumni event. After a welcome note by Lian Ma, Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Engineering, who completed the program in 2004, the attendants received video messages from the President of the Tsinghua IE Alumni Association and the Director of the Department of Industrial Engineering. Furthermore, there were short presentations by program participants from both nations who reported on their experiences at the host universities.

Among the attendees were also three Chinese graduates now working in Germany, two of them with doctorates from German universities. All of them fully fluent in German, they were able to share memories and exchange experiences with former fellow students in the language of the host country. The event was concluded with a dinner at a Chinese restaurant.

With the alumni event, the Department of Industrial Engineering has officially inaugurated the German branch of its association. Coordinator of the German branch is Mr. Yang Wang, research assistant at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology in Aachen.

Strategic Partnership

In 2013, Tsinghua University and RWTH Aachen entered into a strategic partnership funded by the German Academic Exchange Service, DAAD, and the Ministry of Education and Research.

Support and funding will be made available for mobility measures, i.e. opportunities for study, teaching, and research at the partner university as well as joint summer schools and scientific workshops. In this way, networking and research collaboration between the partner institutions shall be enhanced on all levels.
