Understanding Physics!
The RWTH Department of Physics is holding a lecture open to the public as part of the the "Understanding Physics" November lectures.
Optical microscopy enables the investigation of numerous phenomena and samples from biology, materials science, and technology. However, the resolution attainable in classic light microscopy is restricted through bending the used light about a wavelength. As a result, smaller structures, such as at the nanolevel, cannot be resolved with this method.
Microsopy with infrared light lends itself if additional information about the molecular composition of a material is desired. This light can initiate molecular vibrations, providing information about their chemical composition. New optical microscopy processes for depicting nanostructures will be presented in teh talk. These processes use infrared light, invisible to humans, to provide additional information about molecules and solid bodies at the nanometer scale.
The event with RWTH professor Thomas Taubner is Saturday, November 15, 2014, at 11am in lecture hall Fo2 , Kármán-Auditorium, Eilfschornsteinstraße 15. Admission is free of charge and registration is not required.
