Photovoltaics Cause Number of Battery Storage Units to Rise Sharply


A JARA study carried out by RWTH Aachen University and Forschungszentrum Jülich shows that most stationary battery storage units are purchased for private use.

Not only the number of electric cars and e-bikes, but also the amount of stationary battery storage has increased dramatically in Germany in recent years. This is shown in a comprehensive analysis by JARA Energy, the joint energy research association of Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University. According to this analysis, most stationary batteries were purchased privately as power storage for photovoltaic systems. Together, they had a capacity of around 930 MWh in 2018, which corresponds to that of a medium-sized pumped-storage power plant. There was also a significant increase in stationary large battery storage facilities, whose capacity in 2018 was around 550 MWh and which are primarily used to stabilize the electricity grids.

The investigation shows that storage solutions with batteries for stationary applications are becoming increasingly important. In 2018, sales exceeded those of pumped-storage power plants for the first time, with both technologies together covering around 75 percent of the total market for stationary energy storage.
