Four RWTH Aachen Graduates Receive Award
RWTH graduates Jan Moritz Eickhoff, Pascal Köhn, Stefan Liebich, and Jan van der Lucht were awarded the 2014 Otto Junker Award for their oustanding academic performance. Dr. Ambros Schindler, Chair of the Otto Junker Foundation, and Dr. Stefan Miskiewicz, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the foundation, handed out the awards. RWTH Vice-Rector Aloys Krieg and Professor Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Bleck, chair of the foundation's advisory committee, congratulated the award winners.
27-year-old Jan Moritz Eickhoff from Wermelskirchen studied materials engineering. He wrote his Master's thesis titled "Berechnung der erstarrungsbedingten Spannungsverteilung beim Elektroschlackeumschmelzprozess" under the supervision of Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Herbert Pfeifer at the Department of Industrial Furnaces and Heat Engineering. Eickhoof has been working as an academic staff member and has been pursuing his doctorate at this RWTH department since November 2013. During his studies he received numerous honors: he was a scholarship holder of the NRW Education Fund as well as the German Academic National Foundation, was named to the RWTH Dean's List, was a participant in the "best off" Program by ThyssenKrupp Steel Europe AG and SMS Siemag Studienförderung. The Aachen university already honored Eickhoff with the Springorum commemorative coin for his outstanding studies.
"Einbindung dynamischer Messdaten in die Zustandsbewertung von Betriebsmitteln der Verteilungsnetzebene“ is the title of Pascal Köhn's, 26, Master's thesis. The thesis served as the conclusion to his electrical engineering studies at the Institute of High Voltage Technology under Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Armin Schnettler. Köhn is currently purusing his doctorate and working as an academic staff member at the institute. During his studies he was involved as a member of the VDE Hochschulgruppe and was speaker of the group.
Gelsenkirchen native Stefan Liebich studied electrical engineering, information technology, and computer engineering. During his studies he was active in the electrical engineering student representative council and the representative council advisory board, mentored international students at RWTH through the BeBuddy program, and assisted students with the MATLAB developing tool. His thesis, titled "Fusion of multichannel physiological signals for robust vital signs estimation“ was written at the Chair of Medical Information Technology. The 26-year-old has been working as an academic staff member at the Institute of Communication Systems and Data Processing under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Peter Vary. Liebich is also pursuing a doctorate. He has already received a scholarship from the German Academic National Foundation and a Master's scholarship from the company The MathWorks. Additionally, he and four fellow studnets won the Rhode & Schwarz international case study competition.
Jan van der Lucht, born in April 1987 in Cologne, wrote his Master's thesis on the "Charakterisierung von Mikrostrukturen zweier Schmiedestähle durch Kombination hochauflösender Untersuchungsmethoden." This served as the final component of his materials engineering course of study at the RWTH Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy under the direction of Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wolfgang Bleck. Van der Lucht was a scholarship recipient of the RWTH Aachen Education Fund and later received a Germany Scholarship. During his Master's studies he was named to the RWTH Dean's List. He completed a stay abroad in China as a DAAD scholarship recipient and was active as an ambassador. His team won first place in a student competition for innovative light-weight construction. The Aachen university honored him with Springorum commemorative coin for his outstanding scientific achievements.
