RWTH Holiday Camp Honored with Code Week Award

The "Informatik-Feriencamp für Weltverbesserer“ or "Computer Science Holiday Camp for Do-Gooders" at RWTH Aachen has been awarded the Code Week Award. The holiday camp is one of the projects from the InfoSphere, RWTH Aachen's computer science lab for school pupils.

 

The Code Week Award was announced in 2014 by the Technologiestiftung Berlin in collaboration with the Design Research Lab Berlin and was awarded to initiatives for workshop series or other formats. A jury chose the recipients, taking the pedagogical concept, equal opportunities, diversity, sustainability, and methodology into consideration. The prize money amounts to 75,000 Euros.

The InfoSphere team received 10,000 Euros, with which it can offer two "Informatik-Feriencamps für Weltverbesserer" with overnight stays. School students in grades 8 and above can participate free of charge.

During the three-day workshop the adolescents learn how they how to use a microcontroller or Arduino. The first day is an introductory day, so that those students without programming experience can also participate. Afterwards, they form teams and develop ideas for projects and implement them. Possibilities included clothing that lights up, a gesture control for smartphones, or a self-driving car. The workshop ends with a final presentation, to which family and friends are invited. The program also includes a rally through the city and university.

Registration for a holiday camp from April 8 to 10, 2015, or August 5 to 7, 2015, is open online. The registration deadline for the camp in April is March 1, 2015.
