Depending on the objective of your research project at RWTH and your status at the University, you will have to go through various procedures to check that you fully meet the requirements for your specific project.

Are you aiming to complete your doctorate at RWTH? Will you be employed during your doctoral studies? Are you perhaps already doing your doctorate at a university outside of Germany and would like to enroll at RWTH during a research stay in order to get a semester ticket and a BlueCard?

Have you found a supervisor for your doctorate?
The crucial first step on your path to a doctorate at RWTH is to find a professor to supervise your research. Use the faculty websites to find out about the research areas of different professors at RWTH. Then apply as a doctoral candidate.
Please note that the International Office cannot arrange contact between applicants and possible supervisors. Instead, please try to make contact with potential supervisors yourself by sending an impressive application by email.
Are you aiming to complete your doctorate at RWTH?
If you are aiming to complete your doctorate at RWTH, please find out about the doctoral requirements for prospective students with foreign university degrees.
As soon as you have found a supervisor, you can attach the written confirmation of supervision to your formal application for admission to the doctoral program.
Will you be financing your stay at RWTH with a scholarship or your own funds? Then you will find further information on the formalities on the graduation from RWTH and financing your studies with a scholarship page.

Will you only be spending part of your doctoral studies at RWTH?
If you are going to complete a doctoral program at a university outside Germany and would like to spend a limited period of time at RWTH as part of your doctoral program, please find out about the admission requirements and the application process for so-called sandwich doctoral candidates.
Again, your first step is to find a supervising professor, since you will already need the written confirmation of supervision to be able to apply for the so-called sandwich doctorate.
