Space Probes: In the Depths of Space

RWTHextern will host an event series on unmanned space missions. The first of four events will be a lecture by Professor Thomas Hebbeker on the topic of “Space Probes – Astro-Physical Fundamentals,” taking place in lecture hall Fo4, Kármán Auditorium.  

The lecture deals with the significance of physics for space probe flights, in particular with regard to feasible flight distances and flight times, which illustrate the unimaginable dimensions of the universe. Topics also include the propulsion methods and attained travel speeds of space probes as well as the orbits on which they travel our planetary system.

On Friday, April 17, 2014, interested students and citizens are invited to visit the Aachen Observatory. They have the opportunity to get informed on stars, star constellations, and planets of the night sky, as well as on the space probes Dawn and New Horizon orbiting the dwarf planets Ceres and Pluto.

Furthermore, visitors are introduced to the historical telescope and the telescope dome. If the weather allows it, observations of the night sky using the big telescope will be made. If you want to participate in the event, please register by email to Kurt.Schaefer@mail.aachen.de.
