The German Research Foundation, DFG for short, will establish 14 new priority programs, coordinated by RWTH Aachen University.

This includes the program titled “Machine Learning in Process Engineering. Knowledge Meets Data: Interpretability, Extrapolation, Reliability, Trust” at RWTH Aachen University. Priority programs investigate the scientific foundations of current or emerging research areas. The supra-regional and interdisciplinary collaborations use innovative methods and are funded by the DFG for six years.

The priority program “Machine Learning in Process Engineering” is coordinated by Professor Alexander Mitsos, director of the RWTH Chair of Process Systems Engineering. The program's members are Professor Asja Fischer from Ruhr University Bochum, Professor Mariusk Kloft from Technical University Kaiserslautern, Professor Jens Repke from Technical University Berlin and Professor Sebastian Sager from Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg.

Process engineering problems are particularly difficult and differ greatly from other fields of application of machine learning. Therefore, scientists from the fields of process engineering, mathematics, and computer science will work on new tasks and challenges for machine learning in joint projects within the priority program, thus preparing the chemical industry for a sustainable future.
