The Battery as a Power Station

RWTH Aachen is co-organizer of the international conference  “Advanced Battery Power – Automotive and Energy Supply Solutions,” taking place from April 28 to 29, 2015, at the Aachen Eurogress conference center.

 

Whether in laptops, cameras, cell phones, or electric cars: without electricity storage devices, none of these products would be sustainably usable.

The present conference has a focus on technologies that are to secure and enhance the functionality  and everyday usability of batteries in the future. 

RWTH’s Institute for Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) organizes the conference  in cooperation with the battery research center “Münster Electrochemical Energy Technology (MEET)”  of Münster University and Haus der Technik in Essen.

Coordinated by Professor Dirk-Uwe Sauer, Chair of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage Systems, scientists, engineers and developers will come together to provide an overview of current trends and developments in materials research and battery systems technology. The conference program includes 60 expert presentations and 130 posters by participants from all over the world, and about 600 attendees are expected.

Diverse Uses in Automotive Applications

The battery is increasingly gaining in significance in modern automobiles. This does not only hold true for electric vehicles, which are by now in series production, but also for cars equipped with a combustion engine, which are getting more efficient through hybridization. Microhybrids, for example, offer start-stop systems and energy recuperation, whose effects on lead-acid battery ageing are being discussed in several conference talks.

Another conference focus is on stationary storage systems: these can be used in combination with solar energy systems  to increase consumption at the point of generation or to deliver network services on a significantly larger scale. In this context, participation in the balancing power market can also be named as a particularly promising possibility. This field of application is currently being investigated in several research projects and will be a major topic at the conference.
