On the Road to Empire
As part of the LiteraTour lecture series, Professor David Engels from the Université libre de Bruxelles will present his recent book “Auf dem Weg ins Imperium – Die Krise der Europäischen Union und der Untergang der römischen Republik“ ("On the Road to Empire: The European Union Crisis and the Decline of the Roman Republic“).
In the book, voted the best non-fiction book in September 2014 by Süddeutsche Zeitung and Norddeutscher Rundfunk, the author investigates whether the EU will soon be confronted with a similarly spectacular systemic change as was the late Roman Republic.
Drawing on twelve indicators, he compares different aspects of the EU’s identity construction to the crisis symptoms of the declining Roman Republic. He identifies several parallels that are as striking as they are unsettling.
